Why do girls get so competitive over a boy?!

First I had one of my supposed 'best friends' to deal with when I liked a friend of hers. She showed no interest in him until she found out that we talked alot and that there was a possibility that I may like him. Now once she's finally moved 300 miles away I've got her equally competitive and flirtatious sister to worry about who has only just become friends with him and will not leave him alone.

Argh. What is a girl to do? Compete, give up or become celebate?

There's a part of me that feels like we should be like dogs are mark our territory so it's a no go for anyone else...just not by peeing all over something.
