Should marriage be abolished in the US?

Let's face it - The Divorce rate is at least 50 percent and people are just so less traditional with marriage anyway as we go on. Should we switch to civil unions maybe for everyone? The system of marriage doesn't seem to be working. Discuss.

Gene Simmons' advice on it:

Men - Worst mistake you could ever make. You'll give up half your fortune in the divorce.

Women - Smartest move you could make. You collect alimony and still keep all your money from a job. Most of the divorce laws favor to your side. Do it often.

He says always get full disclosure before the fact. And draw up a legal cohabitation agreement. Your money stays yours and vice versa.

abolished? as in, made illegal?

yeah, of course. the law should interfere with every kind of personal matter that some people have trouble getting right the first time.

how the heck would that solve anything? its not like divorce costs taxpayers at large anything. and it certainly won't resolve the reasons people get divorced. it would just make the numbers look good.

i don't really see why you'd abolish marriage? people should be able to do what they want to do. The less restrictions on life the better.

Sure it might not work for 50% of people, but that means that for 50% of people it does.

I think people would benefit from more information on things like managing money, debts and parenting. This would help the situation a lot more than abolishing the notion of marriage.
