but i was thinking of something more practical. she is kind of poor, only makes like $7 an hour. she has two jobs. she's really stressed all the time. sometimes she cant afford to buy herself cigs. but maybe walmart might be kind of insulting, cos you know, a gift card to walmart, eh. but she goes there all the time.
if i go with a gift card, how much should it be for? $50? $75 ? i dont want to seem like i'm sucking up, but $100 might be really nice |

well you don't want to show her up like hey i'm rich and you're poor
i'm sure $50 would be sufficient

i'm sure $50 would be sufficient | im really poor too. i live off student loans at the moment. she has bought me a lot of meals though. at least $100 worth.
i lived with her for awhile too with the bf. so im sure i ran up the bills a little, and probably owe her like $300-$400 for rent |

so parents and bf's mom. go. | $50 gift card
AND a nice scented candle. A big one. Spend $10-$15 on it.
She's still a woman, and, with gifts, it's nice to be practical (the gift card) but it's also nice to buy someone something they can't justify buying for themselves when they're broke (like the candle).
Plus, when she lights it she'll think of you, pleasantly. |

| | | ^ *shudders* It's hard enough buying for a girlfriend, let alone her parents.
I thought about it last year, but I decided that it wasn't worth the risk. The only thing I could think of was booze and that probably isn't ideal for an alcoholic. |

| | | I think a gift certificate is really thoughtless, its like saying "i cant buy you a gift", I feel very insulted when I get one, I want the person to put some thought in my gift, even if I don't like it.
get her a scarf or a cologne, a pretty ashtray (you said she smokes). |

but i agree about giftcards being impersonal thats why i usually give a small present at the same time
that way one thing or the other should make them happy or at least you covered all the bases
zeke
i don't think it is necessarily an obligation
but it depends on the circumstances
whether you spend x-mas w. them or not etc
i think it applies here w. the background she has given

I really only spend on immediate members of my family and other extensions. Certainly not my gf's parents, unless things were getting quite serious or I had gotten quite close to them, I dunno. I think I wouldnt want it to look like im trying too hard to ingratiate myself with her family. |
