Is Girl Talk’s Night Ripper 2006's Grey Album?

While You Scratch Your Head, Girl Talk's Live Show Blows Your Mind

It's a question that many seem to be asking. Is Night Ripper this year’s Grey Album? Buzz from respected sources such as Pitchfork, MTV, XLR8R, CMJ, Spin, and Blender have turned the world on to the production talents of Gregg Gillis AKA Girl Talk.

Remix requests are rolling in, and everyone from Beck to Superchunk is reaching out to connect with Gregg Gillis. Apparently, Gillis knows how to rock the audio editing software, but until you've seen him live, you have no idea how hard he can rock the house. From the look of it, the party is far from over - and the party is what's it's all about. That's when the real connections are made.

Commenting on his often half-naked live show Gillis says, “I don't want to play a typical electronic show where everyone is sitting around. I like to spaz out at shows to keep things interesting, and sometimes clothes come off.”

“Night Ripper,” based on Gillis’ live sets from the last two years, continues in the tradition set forth by his previous records: a non-stop party derived from the intricate layering and splicing of favorite hits both obvious and obscure from all corners of the music world (see below).

Artists appearing on Night Ripper include:

2 Live Crew, 2Pac, 50 Cent, 69 Boyz, ABBA, Paula Abdul, Aerosmith, Amerie, Annie, Arrested Development, David Banner, Rob Base, Bel Biv Devoe, George Benson, Better Than Ezra, Beyonce, Black Box, The Black Crowes, Black Eyed Peas, Black Rob, Black Sheep, Boredoms, Boston, Bow Wow, Boyz II Men, The Breeders, Chris Brown, Bun B, Busta Rhymes, Calloway, Candyman, Mariah Carey, Cassidy, Chicago, Ciara, Clipse, Phil Collins, Nikki Costa, Crime Mob, D12, D4L, DJ Assault, DJ EZ Rock, Dem Franchise Boyz, Digable Planets, Diplomats, Dinosaur Jr., Dr. Dre, Jermaine Dupree, Elastica, Missy Elliot, Eminem, The Emotions, En Vogue, Fabolous, Fall Out Boy, Fatman Scoop, The Five Stairsteps, Fleetwood Mac, Folk Implosion, FoFighters, G-Unit, The Game, Garbage, Genesis, Andrew Gold, Al Green, Peter Gunz, Hall and Oates, Sophie B. Early praise for Girl Talk's groundbreaking Night Ripper:

“The word 'mash-up' dies here. Nothing but 164 of the most unstoppable songs ever (Missy, M.I.A, M.A.R.R.S, Madonna, Boston) in one sitting. Throw out your record collection.” - CMJ New Music Monthly

“Gillis has officially made your summer party his bitch. Gillis takes the best parts of every song you ever liked and strings them together to create the hottest party mix you can fathom.” - Tiny Mix Tapes

“Classic rock, vintage soul, alt rock, crunk, golden-age hiphop, and James Fuckin' Taylor coexist in chaotic harmony” – The Stranger

I'm not sure why this was in the related threads for "I made out with a gringo last night" by HCH, but who cares?

This album is pretty awesome. I put it on when there's people round.

i got the album yesterday.
it's a lot more hip-hop than i was expecting..but not in a bad way.

i was expecting a more glitchy, electronic cut+paste album.

still, pretty tasty. anything else like this you would recommend????

i read this thread title about six times before i got it.

i am beginning to think that this guy is a plank, i have never been to an electronic show and 'sat around' in my life. i love remixes but i am not turned on by this guys artist selection, or even his style that much. too nerdy, dare say it mark ronson's better.
