Who is your all-time favorite band or artist, and why? I like all sorts of music but one band stands above all for me. The Slovenian/Italian band
Devil Doll. The composer is an absolute genius. The music he creates is not just music, it is a carefully orchestrated artwork with every single tiny bit well thought out and full of meaning. I love Devil Doll because the man behind the band known as Mr Doctor gave me back the faith I had lost that any real artists still existed. I also love the fact that he uses all real orchestras and choirs.
The music is described by people as progressive symphonic rock but I can't really put it into any genre. Mr Doctor is known as "The Man of 1000 Voices" and sounds like noone else I have ever heard. When I first heard Devil Doll I thought it was a woman singing. Each cd the band has released (They have 5 out, Mr Doctor has refused to contact anyone since 1996 after members of his own fanclub stole from him) is one long song which takes you on a ride. From hugely bombastic full orchestra pieces to slow, soft emotional piano breaks with insane rambling vocals then back to heavy rock parts.
There is alot of mystery surrounding the band and the secretive Mr Doctor which I also like. My favourite album by Devil Doll is Sacrilegium.
http://www.devildoll.nl Did someone in your life influence your taste in music?
My family influenced my taste in music alot. I still listen to music I heard as a child like Johnny Cash and The Divinyls.
Have you met any of your favorite musicians? How was the experience?
I'm friends with alot of my favourite musicians so it wasn't really like meeting them as someone "famous".
I remember when I was 15 years old though, waiting outside an L7 concert to meet them and finally they came out. Donita Sparks was wearing a sexy leopard print jacket and holding 2 beers with a cig hanging from her mouth. She hugged me and said in her American accent, "Hey sweetie thanks so much for coming" we talked for awhile and then Suzi Gardner came out. She was wearing a sort of blue nurses dress with a leather jacket. I had thrown some weird fucked up doll on the stage with it's legs attached to it's back (hey I was 15) and she still had it in her pocket. She asked me what my name was and then signed some dodgy photo I had of them I ripped from the newspaper. I got Donita to sign it too.
What was the first concert you went to?
A metal festival which is still held every year in Canberra, Australia called Metal For The Brain. I wanted to see Blooduster.
What was the last?
A viking metal band called Heidevolk at The Vera in Groningen, NL.
Favorite concert memory?
Being underneath Angus Young's glass podium while he span around on his back playing If You Want Blood in Canberra 1999.
What is the most embarrassing CD in your collection?
I'm not really embarassed by it but the worst cd I own but love is a T.A.T.U cd.
What was the last album that you bought?
I can't remember cause it was so long ago, I got a music dvd, Macabre Live In Holland which was exciting because I was at the filming.
Is there a band or artist that you cannot stand, why?
At the moment... Shakira. My workmates have the radio on all day and I woke up this morning with her horrid shakey voice in my head. I think her lyrics are disgusting too. Is that reason enough to want someone's vocal chords ripped out through their anus?
What are the 5 (only 5) albums that you would bring if you were going to be stuck on a deserted island?
Devil Doll - Sacrilegium
Divinyls - Underworld
Forgotten Woods - Curse of Mankind
Burzum - Self Titled
Babes In Toyland - Fontanelle
