Kings of Leon ... all of them. 'Nuff said. Granted, this is just my personal opinion, obviously. They're pretty much the only ones as far as I can tell.

I could have wrote that article.

People should seriously look into Derek Trucks and the Derek Trucks band though...there is some promise in that.

It's important to remember most people who aren't in it for the money don't really have a choice. They lack the talent, anything salable and aren't willing to put the work in.

So if they can't get rich, they're going to look down on people who can as a sort of consolation prize.

And why is the guy in that article the least bit remarkable? People have been making music with their friends with no intention of becoming professional musicians since the beginning of rock and roll. Like insurance salesmen and accountants will have a few beers and play cover songs in the garage.

Also, the whole idea of rock stars is always made fun of and deservedly so. But I think a lot of these indie douche bags are worth laughing at too.

If you take K Records or KRS, most of those bands are complete garbage.
But they still take themselves so seriously. "Nobody will buy our records, we must really be on to something."

Or you hear how Bikini Kill could have been as big as Green Day if only they did press. Fuck off.

One last thing: QUEENS OF THE STONE-AGE. ok, now shut the fuck up.

Is it me or that was a time when people looked for something that was a bit more personal than seasonal and a bit more than garbage now since garbage is what they´re looking for, ideally they go for really shallow garbage that´s gonna bore you very soon (since there is no depth) so they can die and bring on the next garbage as long term investments don´t interest anyone and everything has to be willing to die soon in the name of musical profit and fame, remember in the so called niche now is the real profit once so hard now you don´t have to go that far, every first album has to come with a ticking bomb that´s gonna destroy itself since the season is the same as the fashion one?
There is a good side and a bad side to this, but they feel they don´t have to make the effort, ONE catchy riff is enough makes me miss the times where people actually put effort into making one big catchy cheesy album as a whole (takes some skill).

you know, one thing that bothers me people don´t listen to whole albums anymore, if they do it they do it once, and if by any chance they don´t get it, they don´t give it a second listen, if they do listen to a whole album they never do it carefully, they don´t appreciate or go back to it do they just a few tracks that they might enjoy most of the time which makes bands and artists stop thinking of albums as concepts and they think of singles
anyway the idea of rockstar is silly in the first place and i thought i´d expect that idea to be buried as it evolves into something else, it does evolve into something else that´s not real appreciation for music just for being music

because we're now more aware than ever of how markettable music has become. especially since any song you can think of can be purchased for a $1.00 on Itunes, commercials are frequently sampling non-commercial music, and several waves of anti-music have become popular mainstream phenomena. going into professional music NOW more than ever is a choice of being part of this commercial wave or not. also because it's easier now, more than ever to release music to a larger audience without being attached to a label. there is a choice. the test of "making-it" is not about the money & mass-media exposure anymore (i.e.-traditional rockstar format). so long as Pitchfork namedrops your band &/or you have some other famous connections

and you're so far off on this. but that is your opinion and nobody told you to buy their records, unlike a lot of that other stuff that's crammed down people's throats.

yeah, mp3 killed the cd.

how does planned obsolescence work in music? are you saying that artists have been reduced to one catchy riff now before it's over? that the emphasis is more on style than content these days? i don't feel like it's gotten any less real. since when?
