Iggy, Stipe On New York Dolls Album

Story by: Tony Gedrich

The New York Dolls, the glammed up early-'70s band responsible, in large part, for the creation of punk rock, have announced that they will be working on their first new album, One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This (Roadrunner), in over 30 years. The 13-track album, due in US stores July 25, will contain guest appearances from R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe, Iggy Pop, Against Me! frontman Tom Gabel and rock 'n' roll pioneer Bo Diddley. Vocalist David Johansen and guitarist Syl Sylvain will represent the original lineup. Rick Rivets, however, will not be on the album. The band will be filled out by Steve Conte on guitar, Sami Yaffa on bass, Biran Delaney on drums and Brian Koonin on keyboard.

Talking about the album on Roadrunner's website, Johansen said, "There's so much negative bullshit being forced down people's throats in the marketplace, we really wanted to create a thing of beauty that will stand the test of time, and hopefully add something positive to people's lives."

Sylvain added (with a touch more sarcasm), "I don't care if this record is a hit, just as long as every man, woman and child buys it."

Jack Douglas, the band's original engineer for their self-titled debut, is back working with them again, this time as producer. "This album is a fuckin' masterpiece," he said.

The Dolls will go on tour in North America and abroad this summer. Dates have yet to be announced.

pitchfork today:
Frontman Johansen recently talked to Pitchfork from a recording studio in Manhattan's Chinatown. "After (drummer) Billy (Murcia) and (bassist) Arthur (Kane) came to my apartment at Sixth St. and First Avenue, they took me to John's (guitarist Johnny Thunders) house," he said, reflecting on the band's genesis. "We made music and then we were a band. I'm not kidding when I say it was that fast and that simple. Syl showed up a month later."

Billy, John, and Arthur died, as did drummer Jerry Nolan; Billy first, Arthur most recently. Kane's loss is the saddest, as he stuck around long enough to see the improbable: a 2004 Dolls reunion, cobbled together by Morrissey, ex-president of the British New York Dolls fan club.

"He called, wanted to do a show with us," said Johansen of Morrissey. "My immediate answer was 'no way.' I even asked him, 'would you do it?' And he said 'NO.' But then I really did have to think about how fun it would be to do one show-- one show-- having laughs, seeing the guys. But then...I had more fun than I ever imagined." So did Kane, the subject of the recently released documentary New York Doll. But he died of leukemia not long after that first reunion show.

"He didn't believe in chance circumstance," said Johansen of Kane. "It was really important for him to come full circle as a Doll."

Weeks later, Johansen and Sylvain joined with Sam Yaffa (of Hanoi Rocks) and several members of Johansen's solo band and took on Little Steven's International Underground Garage Festival in New York City. Somehow, from that point on, Johansen and Sylvain were convinced they'd found the new New York Dolls. Not just sidemen but a solid batch of like-minds with whom they could commit to making further Dolls music in gang fashion. "Whatever we do is the Dolls, nothing we're doing is based on anything we've done before, but there is that vibe," said Johansen.

The record features several high profile guest spots: Michael Stipe jumps on "Dancing on the Lip of A Volcano", Iggy Pop sings his napalm heart out on "Gimme Love and Turn on the Light", Against Me!'s Tom Gabel squeals on "Punishing World", and the Dolls' hero, Bo Diddley, sings and plays on "Seventeen". David Bowie was supposed to stop by, but it didn't work out (guess he was too busy with TV on the Radio.)

"We had a reputation of being fuck ups" said Johansen of the talk of drugs, more drugs and failure. "We want to make this big [and] special for as long as we can. And rather than do lot of the negative nihilist shit that came out in our wake, be positive."

New York Dolls
The New York Dolls live reunion went so well that they went into the studio to keep the momentum going. The fruits of their labour will emerge on July 25 with the Roadrunner Records release of One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This.

Both glam and punk rock owe a major debt to the Dolls, who opened the doors in their native New York City for The Ramones, Blondie, Television and Talking Heads after forming 35 years ago. The British punk scene also owes them a debt through their relationship with impresario Malcolm McLaren, who went on to create The Sex Pistols.

While early members Billy Murcia, Jerry Nolan, Johnny Thunders and Arthur "Killer" Kane have all passed away over the years, David Johansen and Sylvain Sylvain have recruited some fresh blood for the new-look Dolls. Guitarist Steve Conte, Hanoi Rocks bassist Sami Yaffa, drummer Brian Delaney and keyboardist Brian Koonin all contributed to the 13 tracks on the new album.

The Dolls reformed in 2004 at the request of their former fan club president, Morrissey, who wanted them to play the Meltdown Festival that he was curating in London, England. That one-off concert soon turned into several shows and the creation of several new songs. Some of those expected on the new album are "Take A Good Look At My Good Looks," "Maimed Happiness," "Runnin Around" and the first single, "Dance Like A Monkey." Jack Douglas, who engineered the group's self-titled 1973 debut, produced the record.

One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This features guest contributions from R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe on "Dancing On The Lip Of A Volcano," Iggy Pop on "Gimme Love And Turn On The Light," Against Me!'s Tom Gabel on "Punishing World" and Dolls hero Bo Diddley on "Seventeen."

A summer tour is in the works, though no dates have yet been announced.

Thumbs up The New York Dolls are officially back!

On July 25th, the seminal rockers will release One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This, their first studio album in over 30 years.

The first pressing of the eagerly anticipated album will include a special 45 minute "making-of" DVD as well as the bonus track "17." The DVD, shot and compiled by Walker Lamond will contain witty and insightful candid studio moments with founding members David Johansen, Sylvain Sylvain and the rest of the band, as well as footage of guest artists and legendary producer Jack Douglas (John Lennon, Aerosmith).

One Day... marks the triumphant return for the band since 1974's Too Much Too Soon. It features 13 new tracks including the first single and video "Dance Like a Monkey" and guest appearances by Michael Stipe, ("Dancing on the Lip of A Volcano"), Iggy Pop ("Gimme Luv and Turn On the Light"), Tom Gabel of Against Me! ("Punishing World"), and the Dolls' own hero, Bo Diddley, on ("17").

One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This complete track list is:
"We're All in Love"
"Runnin' Around"
"Plenty of Music"
"Dance Like a Monkey"
"Punishing World"
"Maimed Happiness"
"Fishnets and Cigarettes"
"Gotta Get Away from Tommy"
"Dancing on the Lip of a Volcano"
"I Ain't Got Nothing"
"Rainbow Store"
"Gimme Luv and Turn on the Light"
"Take a Good Look at my Good Looks"

The New York Dolls, who formed in 1971, only to burn brightly then break up in 1975, have been accused of inspiring everything from punk rock to hair - metal. "A lot of the mess people are listening to gets blamed on the Dolls, but we've always been just a stupid R&B based rock & roll band," says David Johansen.

In 2004, former New York Dolls fan club president and legendary rocker, Morrissey made the request that reunited his boyhood idols for the Meltdown Festival. He was curating the event at the Royal Festival Hall in London. The one-off date then turned into a full-fledged tour, "We were having so much fun, we decided to continue past the summer, and naturally, started writing some new songs," says the band. The New York Dolls consists of Johansen, Sylvain, guitarist Steve Conte, bass player Sami Yaffa, keyboard player Brian 'the Professor' Koonin, and drummer Brian 'Delancey' Delaney.
