Pink Floyd legend passes away aged 60
Pink Floyd legend Syd Barrett has died at his Cambridgeshire home.
The singer, 60, who suffered from an LSD-induced breakdown while at the peak of his career in the Sixties, died last Friday (July 7) from complications related to diabetes.
His brother Alan confirmed his death today (July 11), telling The Guardian: "He died peacefully at home. There will be a private family funeral in the next few days."
A spokeswoman for Pink Floyd has said: "He died very peacefully a couple of days ago. There will be a private family funeral."
How very sad
I hope he was content in the last years of his life. His music won't be forgotten. |

Anyway, R.I.P. Sid.

| | | Well he tried so hard in the last few decades to keep himself hidden away from the public so it dosen't really suprise me. His family probably don't see it as much of our business, which is fair enough. |

| | | Syd has been a very inspirational figure in my musical progression, both inside Pink Floyd and out. I'm very grateful for his contribution to music over the years, and hope to continue appreciating and enjoying his work throughout my life. I must say, I'm surprised he lived so long. My condolences would go towards his family, friends and loved ones. I imagine this is a very sad time for them and I wish them comfort during the grieving process.
Rest in peace. |

Originally Posted by shivathedestroyer Could someone explain the LSD breakdown? | Syd's recreational LSD use, combined with several psychotic illnesses (primarily schizophrenia), induced much stress and grief for Barrett and his loved ones, eventually resulting in his departure from Pink Floyd. His drug-fuelled behaviour and performances became so erratic that his bandmates and girlfriend were no longer willing to put up with them. It was reported that he would beat his girfriend, give his cats LSD, strum on a single chord throughout the duration of hour-long shows, remain silent during one-to-one interviews, cover his head in hair gel under spotlights to create the illusion that his face was melting, and behave increasingly strange and eccentric. Rodger Waters commented that he had become "monster-like". Subsequent to his short-lived solo career, he went bald, gained weight and spent most of the rest of his life living with his mother. He walked into the Abbey Road studio while his shocked bandmates were compiling "Wish You Were Here". Nobody recognised him at first and and he compulsively brushed his teeth throughout the session. |

| | | God, this is awful. I love Syd Barrett. I did a double take when I saw the title of this thread. I'm going to go and listen to The Madcap Laughs and dread my boyfriend learning of this in the papers or if I tell him (Syd Barrett's music played a big part in our falling in love). |
