| | | The White Stripes / Coke Commercial Leaked / Meg to do soundtrack work? White to focus on new band
London: Rocker Jack White has confirmed that he is taking a break from The White Stripes to focus all his energy on a new band called The Raconteurs.
According to contactmusic.com, White has postponed all future recordings with his band mate and ex-wife Meg White despite saying that there will be a new album out soon. White says his new four-piece band is no longer a side project.
He says: "A lot of people have this assumption that this is a side project or whatever, and the only way to solve that is to go out and play. The only way to show you are a band is to be a band, and that's what we are doing.
"Of course, there is going to be more White Stripes records, more Greenhornes records, more Brendan Benson records, but for right now, it's time for The Raconteurs." http://www.newkerala.com/news2.php?a...lnews&id=42221

| | Jolene by the White Stripes. I've discovered this song because some people claimed it as their favorite cover song in another thread on here. I've always adored this song but also always disliked the White Stripes.
Now I'm totally hooked with Jack's voice on this song and his rendition of it.
So.... I'm asking you to name me a few White Stripes songs that can keep up with this. |

| | | Best live band EVER in my opinion. I'm curious about seeing the raconteurs live, I can't really see the two working together. When I saw the greenhornes they were stoned out of their heads and just sort of stood there, which is the opposite of the white stripes. |

| | | Jack White's Coca-Cola ad leaksonline The star has composed a tune of love
The much anticipated Jack White-penned Coca-Cola advert has leaked on the internet.
The White Stripes man has written and sings the advert's songs which boasts an uplifting, brass-led tune and the chorus: "It's the right thing to do, and you know it, It's inside of you, so just show it, love is the truth."
The clip itself kicks off with shots of a girl in an electric red wig and matching dress, skipping out of a red house, with a bottle of Coke in her hand.
She shares the drink with a white tracksuited man. He then passes on the beverage to a little boy who then passes it on to a hobo. Each person mentioned appears in multiple, just like the Michael Gondry-directed video for The White Stripes' 2003 single 'The Hardest Button To Button', where multiple shots of Jack and Meg appeared in time to the beat of the song.
The video ends with the girl smiling at the camera, a bird perched on her shoulder.
The ad is currently showing on
Youtube.com.
The star told NME.COM last year he'd composed the song to get a message of love out to the world.
He said at the time: "I've been offered the opportunity to write a song in a way which interests me as a songwriter. I certainly wouldn't want a song that I'd already written to be used on a commercial. That seems strange.
"But to be asked to write something particular along one theme of love in a worldwide form that I'm not really used to appealed to me. I've written a song and I wrote it really quickly and it's an interesting commercial that's been made. I was inspired by the commercial." http://www.nme.com/news/white-stripes/22812
I think it's retro and kitsch and funny and I don't hate him for it.

White Stripes' Producer Wants Credit for their Sound
After busting onto the scene in 2001 with their album White Blood Cells that spawned the hit single "Fell in Love With A Girl" and its Lego block video, the White Stripes’ music has penetrated the airwaves.
Now a former producer for the band, Jim Diamond, wants to get in on a piece of the White Stripes’ royalties. A producer for the two albums prior to White Blood Cells says he wants a share of their royalties because according to the Associated Press he says he “played a pivotal role in creating the band’s signature sound”.
Diamond was a co-producer for the band’s self titled debut and listed as a sound mixer for their sophomore album De Stijl. He had no part in creating either album after that.
The band denies that Diamond’s claims have any merit. They’ll duke it out in court on June 12.

| | | White Stripes Trial Set, Jack White Coke Ad Unveiled White Stripes Trial Set, Jack White Coke Ad Unveiled Dave Maher reports: Quick, think of the greatest artist-producer collaborations of all time: Bowie and Eno. The Beatles and George Martin. Jay-Z and Kanye. The White Stripes and...Jim Diamond? Yeah, we didn't think of that one either.
The producer, who also runs the Ghetto Recorders studio, is suing Jack and Meg in Detroit's U.S. District Court, according to the Associated Press, claiming he helped shape the band's "signature sound" on the Stripes' self-titled debut and second album, De Stijl. (Seriously, dude, have you never heard the Stooges, the Kinks, or the past sixty-plus years of blues-based music?) He seeks a share of the royalties for those two records.
Diamond is credited as "co-producer" on the debut and as "sound mixer" on De Stijl, and the White Stripes deny that Diamond was as important to the formation of their style as he claims. The AP quotes their lawyer, Bert Deixler, as saying, "It is a meritless case which will be defended with vigor."
Apparently, the Stripes paid Diamond $35 an hour for studio time at Ghetto Recorders, and they think that's all he deserves, since writing the songs themselves entitles them to keep the money they make off their records. But this is a matter of "style," and a June 12 trial date has been set. And when Diamond's done, Santa Claus is going to sue for theft of fashion sense.
In other Stripes news, the duo is still scheduled to appear in the "Jazzy and the Pussycats" episode of "The Simpsons" this fall. Jack White's Coke jingle is also finished, and the commercial it's featured in is available for your viewing pleasure here:
Jack White's other band, the Raconteurs, have also just announced their first West Coast show, which will take place June 7 at the Henry Fonda Theater in Hollywood, California. That and an appearance at Lollapalooza in August are their only scheduled concerts at the moment. Although judging from what we've heard about their previous live shows, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

| | | But don't you see it as cheeky and kitschy? A lot of what he says and does is for shits and giggles and he knows some are in on the joke and doesn't care if others aren't. THe sister/brother thing. The way the roadies dress. The interview on youtube I posted. Their skits on Conan etc..
Plus he made a ton of money and who doesnt want that. I respect this a lot more than if he had taken a song that means something to me and related it forever to a product.

| | | I don't think musicians are beyond reproach. I am a music lover not a "fan." No I have mixed feelings about music in ads. I used to be opposed to it when I was younger. Now I have a more open mind and know people who made money from it that allowed them to continue making music. Sometimes I hate it and other times I am not bothered. Bowie - does he need to sell another song for more money? The Flaming Lips Do You Realize was a song that means something to me personally and it was whored out twice. I would have preferred an original jingle. Redd Kross licenced a song for a commercial and it didn't bother me. I love that band, but the song isn't ruined for me. It depends upon the content of the song for me and it's relation to me. I don't think it's wrong for artists to make money for their art -- it's their job. And who the hell am I to say it is wrong or right? It's their choice. All I can do is say how I feel personally about individual choices and uses. Moby licenced every song on Play and I am not bothered nor do I enjoy the album less. A friend of mine licenced a song to CSi a few months ago and made 10 grand and believe me he needs it. And it will allow him the luxury of making another album.

cos a lot of songwriters make more from one song being used in a commercial than they might make in a lifetime. recently a friend's band apparently licensed one of their tracks for a tampax ad (!!!) and it's enabled them to do a lot of things they normally might not have. |

| | | Ah I see, well we had a thread here about how people felt about bands licensing songs to ads. I thought you were commenting upon that as well. It was a good discussion so I thought I would bring it back since it seems appropriate with this thread. No, I don't believe it's about actually spreading love to the world via Coca Cola. I mean it is, but it wasn't as though he just thought hey I want to spread love to the world and think Coke can do it I guess I'll write a song. I think he's being cheeky. One of the gallagher brothers really wrote Jack off for doing this even though they have their song on an advert. ::shrug::
By the way congratulations to your friends! Coincidentally another friend sold a song to Coke for a commercial and got ripped off, but it had samples so that was part of the reason. But they lowballed him ridiculously.

If a song or an album is good - is good no matter what. Especially in the Jack White/Coca-cola case, Jack wrote this jingle especially for that commercial he didn't license a white stripes song. I don't particularly like it to be honest but it's ok, I won't stop being a WS/Jack White fan because of it.
