I don't think anybody has defended it being released? What Mistress F was saying was more like: what did they really think slapping their glitter-covered asses on camera was going to look like?
But Erykah Badu did pretty much cover that in her message. She didn't follow her gut instinct about this, and instead went along with the concept knowing it made her feel uneasy. She did basically say that is her own foolish mistake.
They should at least have had the opportunity to the view it before its release and give feedback on it, even if their naked bodies weren't in it. That seems like it would be basic etiquette? Maybe that's not how things work normally though, but it ought to be when you're standing over that fine line between art and pornography and somebody's reputation might be at stake.
Also, like Gaukeley said, the angle and framing will have made a massive difference to some of those shots.
