how backwards is this?

i picked up on this band online that i'd never heard of before. they were mentioned in passing on a site i happened to be browsing. so i downloaded their entire album on Soulseek and decided i liked them. then at the cd-store today i saw their album on the shelf and i bought it, feeling good at having supported their band. until i took the album home and opened it up. it turns out they're on BMG and there's anti-piracy, "do not copy under penalty of law" warnings all over it. not only did it ruin the entire packaging, but it made me sorry that i'd spent the money on it. because if it hadn't been ripped i'd have never heard these guys.

how ironic.

can i get a refund on the free-marketting they just wasted?

HAHAHAHAAH anti piracy my arse. Sony makes their CDs copyright protected and then makes/sells Sound Forge that actually bypasses the encryption shit and rips the songs better than MP3 conversion software.

Go figure. Too many fingers in too many pies.

That said I've never downloaded a CD that I haven't bought, but I've only downloaded maybe 2 CDs. Maybe not even two, because I can remember getting Lamb S/T but I can't think what the second CD was...

how do you know you want to buy the CD then? and what's the point of downloading the mp3s after the fact?

wouldnt there be a good chance they had no control over the fact that BMG put that on the cd? i would think they might have not very much control over what actually gets put on there.

No, I think she means that she's only ever downloaded two albums in her puff, and went on to buy both of the CDs.

And I guess you just know you want to buy the CD the good ol' fashioned way. Maybe you hear an album at a friend's place, maybe a friend makes you a mixtape and you hear a few songs that you like, maybe you hear a few singles on the radio and decide you must have the album. However did we cope without free music on the internet, eh.

I use allmusic.com and if you sign up for an account, you can listen to 30 seconds clips of most music for free. That's been extremely handy in pointing me towards albums that I think I'll like.

- Alors, pourquoi l'as-tu pris?
- Parce que je ne pensais pas qu'il pleuvrait.

i realize that. but it's self-fulfilling. no piracy -- no hear. in this case the anti-piracy logo is a negative advertising campaign. so maybe i should listen to them.

i've had an allmusic account forever and have never figured out why those samples don't work for me. i do www.bn.com instead.

the internet is a much greater resource for me than my friends' tastes. and godforbid, the radio. most of my new finds come from my own digging.
