people always say they don't know what indie means, which is so ridiculous to me. it's like when people say: what's emo? and then these people go into some long rant about how most punk is emo, etc, and how emo stands for emotional, and most music is emotional, blah blah blah.
indie: bright eyes, nick drake, modest mouse, that annoying band that sings "soul meets body," arcade fire, belle & sebastian, the shins, damien rice... etc.
basically, if pitchforkmedia is talking about it extensively, if it could be on the OC... the guitars aren't distorted... no hard drumming (ever)... so-so singing often, weird production to cover up weak song-writing, accoustic, etc.
nick drake writes sad stuff... but i don't want something sad and mellow. i want a sadder version of in utero. in utero was fucked up, and it was sad, but in a funny sort of ironic way. and not always sad. it has this really thematic thing about human body parts, etc. it wasn't just all sad.
does this make sense?
i don't just mean hard rock... i just mean not folkie or indie, i suppose. not mellow. like fiona apple, but sad instead of angry... not analytical "i'm gonna get over this" stuff, but just utter gloom.
dirt sounds good. i'll check that out. any more ideas?
