Soooooooooooooooooo, I went to see Devendra Banhart today and it was amazing! The venue was so small and intimate and he was just awesome, learned a fair amount of Russian words and was using them a lot and kept asking the audience for more vodka orange and people just kept bringing them.He was also asking any people who can sing their own songs on stage and was playing and singing with them. The biggest surprise for me was that Tarantula AD guy was on the drums!
After the gig Devendra and others just went into the crowd and we were drinking vodka together and he was drawing weird pictures of cocks, pregnant women and beautiful vaginas for everyone and I was teaching him to spell in Russian and it was just great. He is such a nice, friendly guy, approximately my age and a great laugh!
And then I went to Tarantula guy Greg and told him how I saw them in London and how they blew my mind away and that I bought both their CDs and he was really surprised that I know Tarantula. Cause everyone else was thinking he's just the member of Devendra's band. And we were just chatting with Greg for an hour, discussing all sorts of things: our grandparents (his grandma also had a car accident and is in hospital with the head injury, just like mine), London, NY and Moscow and why I prefer to live in London and my visa problems and Russian music scene and Red Square and social pressure. And he introduced me to anther guy - saying: this is my friend Polina.
And that guy happened to be the organizer of the annual Russian Festival in London. So after I told him, they were bringing crap bands he gave me his phone number and asked to call and provide some help with the festival.
Great, great night overall! Here is one of Devendra's drawings for me. He wrote Круто -which means Cool. I'll try to post some pictures from the show later.
