Canadian ex-pat Peaches — who was crowned electro-smut queen only after a move to Berlin — found herself back on sunny North American shores for the recording of her new LP, Impeach My Bush. But this was no homecoming, with The Fuzzy One instead hitting the appropriately seedy streets of Los Angeles.
"I wanted to work with a producer," Peaches explains, still groggy from a ChartAttack wake-up call. "I wanted to learn how to be a better producer on this album, and get away from the 505 beats, so I wanted to work with somebody.
"Some big producers were suggested to me by my label, and I met with one and I thought, 'You know what? This is going to be totally annoying and not home-style. Because it's not even going to be that producer there, it's going to be his minion,' you know what I mean? And I'm so not into that."
Turning to her musician pals for references, Peaches' search led to Mickey Petralia, an engineer/producer who stood behind the curtain on Beck's Midnite Vultures along with albums by Ladytron, Eels and The Dandy Warhols.
"He's just a cool guy," she says. "I had met him once, but it was when I was DJing so it was loud. It was like, 'Hi! Hi! Nice to meet you!'
"So then I just kind of took a leap of faith and went to work with him. And the first day I got there, he was listening to my songs and making up dance moves to them. It was great. He just talks to you and hangs out, but meanwhile he's doing everything and you don't even realize."
With the help of Petralia and a new live band, Impeach My Bush throws an edgy rock wrench into Peaches' formula of simple beats and dirty rhymes. And who better to usher in this new sound than the original rock 'n' roll lover, Joan Jett?
"She's my friend now," Peaches enthuses. "Because I sampled her on Father****er, we had to get clearance for that song.
"We sent it to her label, which she runs, but she wasn't in the office. They heard it and they were like, 'This is weird, what the ****? Joan's gonna hate this.' But then they played it for her and she was like, 'This is cool, I like this,' and she really got into the album. Like she came to see my show and knew all the words and everything. So when I was making this album, I was in L.A., and she was out here one day and said, 'Hey, it's my 47th birthday, can I come over and hang out?'"
Jett, of course, is just the latest cool collaborator for Peaches, after she out-toughed Iggy Pop in the memorable video for the call-and-answer single, "Kick It." The new disc also features guest turns from former roommate Feist and Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Josh Homme.
"It just kinda happens," Peaches says of her guests. "I didn't plan it, like, 'Must get Joan Jett on album. Had Iggy on last album.'
"Even with Iggy, it was kind of his initiative, you know? Because he covered 'Rock Show' and sent it to me, and I was like, 'Oh well, then can you be on my album. I'll write a song,' that kind of thing. And like with Josh, he's a friend, too. He just came over for a barbeque and brought his guitar. You know, 'My guitar's here, can I play on the album?'"

| | | Been a fan since God know's when. Love the first album, don't really like her second one, and I'm not sure about this new one. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
