While Korn get by with a little help from their friends

Metallica brought an eventful day at Download to an eventful climax tonight (June 10).

For their seventh visit to Donington Racetrack, the heavy metal veterans dedicated a large part of their set to playing 1986 classic 'Master Of Puppets' in its entirety.

Before 'Leper Messiah', frontman James Hetfield asked the crowd, "who bought 'Master Of Puppets' when it first came out?" When met with a muted response by the audience of young festival-goers, he responded; "well who's got it now? Well that's what matters, you're here and you're digging it!"

Early on in the set Metallica also debuted a new song, which Hetfield said was called simply 'The New Song'.

But Hetfield did not join Korn onstage, as had been rumoured earlier in the day.

The nu-metal heavyweights played out their own version of Metallica's 2004 drama when singer Jonathan Davis was hospitalised at the last minute with a mystery illness.

But the band played on, joined by a succession of famous friends plucked from today's line-up, making for an unusual setlist that looked like this:

'Its On' (with Jesse Hasek from 10 Years)
'Falling Away' (with M Shadow from Avenged Sevenfold)
'Somebody' (with Dez Fafara from Devildriver)
'Coming Undone' (with Dez Fafara from 'Devildriver')
'A.D.I.D.A.S.' (with Benji Webbe from Skindred)
'Clown' (with Corey Taylor from Stone Sour)
'Freak' (with Corey Taylor from Stone Sour)
'Blind' (with Matt Healy from Trivium)

Other acts performing today included Secret Machines, Mondo Generator and, for anyone not watching the football, Alice In Chains and Henry Rollins .

Download continues tomorrow with the return of Guns'n'Roses.
