| Other kids switched the second they realised You Got It (The Right Stuff) was the cool new song, but I resisted the New Kids' charms for weeks.
Did I ever mention how You Got It (The Right Stuff) cost me my political innocence? Well it did. YOU SEE, when I was in Form One (about seventh grade) we celebrated the excitement of the 1990 NZ elections by having our own school election. There were three parties: The New Safe Ultraviolet Party (greenies), New National (populists) and The Path of Glory (my party, the lunatic fringe). As poll day approached, the promise of greater tree planting around school and compulsory sunhats in the playground had the NSUVP in the lead. BUT on the morning of election day, at playtime, we found that New National had controversially CHANGED THEIR NAME to The Right Stuff and were pumping out the NKOTB hit at full volume on a GHETTO BLASTER, and were handing out rosettes they had made because Ruth Sutherland (now married to the BIGGEST **** I have ever known) had those cool crinkly-edge-making scissors. AND WELL. What a swing. They romped home. My political innocence was lost. And I DO blame New Kids on the Block. New skids on my jocks.
Actually there's an earlier story, from when I was eight and there was a class election in 1987 based on the previous NZ election. But that's another story for another time. The populists won that time too.
