NEW YORK (Reuters) - Four youths were charged with a hate crime assault on a gay singer who was attacked as he left a Manhattan gay bar, police said on Sunday.

Kevin Aviance, 38, who scored No. 1 dance hits on the Billboard charts with "Da Da Din" and more recently "Alive" in 2003, was attacked late Saturday and kicked by four youths who called him "faggot."

He suffered head trauma and was in stable condition in a Manhattan hospital, where he was being treated for his injuries.

Police charged four young people aged 16 to 20 with hate crime assault and hate crime harassment. They were being held pending arraignment, police said in a statement.

Aviance told the New York Post from his hospital bed that he was especially distraught by the assault because he had been scheduled to perform at a host of gay pride events next week in advance of the city's Gay Pride march on June 25.

"I'm supposed to be doing all this stuff. With my jaw wired shut, what can I do?" he was quoted as saying.

Aviance, born Eric Snead in Richmond, Virginia, told the paper his attackers kicked him in the head a dozen times during the early morning assault in Manhattan's East Village.

"They kicked me in my back, they kicked in my knees. They just kept kicking," he said.

A friend of famous singers like Janet Jackson and Madonna, Aviance has appeared on Tyra Banks' television shows and has performed at parties for Whitney Houston and Lil' Kim.

seriously. i went to Wal Mart this morning to get deoderant because I'm home at my parent's house for the weekend. Some fucking white trash hillbilly wearing JEAN SHORTS and a NASCAR tshirt called me a 'fucking fag' and let's be honest here, I'm 6'2, 190lbs with a shaved head wearing black mesh shorts and black tshirt. Perhaps my Prada sunglasses, which ironically cost more than his vehicle, tipped him off.

Either way, that's the mentality of trash, they feel inclined to say 'faggot' as a sense of empowerment for whatever reason. And this country allows it.

I cringe when I hear about hate crimes period.

Where I attended university there were a bevy of hate crimes just this past year: from the obligatory "faggot" to anti-jewish graffitti to signs about "niggers" being posted all over campus.

Keep in mind less than 15% of the student body is black or gay. (The jews run rampent, myself included, just because — hello East Coast?!)

And nothing was done. It's pushed under a rug. Disgusting.

Believe me I know how you feel. I haven't always lived in finland you know and I have had my share of being subjected to hate crimes for various reasons. I had to learn how to deal with the abhorrent name callings, spttings, beatings, and even sexual humiliation at the age of 13, while having the laws that protected the majority not be applied to myself and my family. I couldn't have been more blessed and grateful to finnish authorities to have that all taken away from me. My heart goes out for you.

it was early, i was on my phone and i just looked at him in disgust, in my 'i went to college and drive a volvo' way.

i would fight someone but i dont want to fuck up my life and end up in court or jail. or dead. 99% of the people ive met love me. 99% of my guy friends are straight. maybe 50% were homophobic but i changed that. Im proud to say that.

i take solace knowing the trash where im from will never leave. i got out. i have a damn good education. i have a wonderful boyfriend who loves me. i have nice things and a comfortable life. perhaps its snobby.
