| | | immortality through records i've heard several artists say that all they really want is to leave the world a few great songs to be remembered by. on the one hand there's the money aspect. but in terms of reaching an audience, a memorable song is about the closest thing to immortality you can achieve. at least it makes a pretty awesome headstone. to have your song become a part of culture. and have your name remembered hundreds of years from now. because a good song never goes out of style. or becomes obsolete.
do you think any songs on the radio these days, years, decades, are immortal worthy? or will they all die with the hype?

| | | like Britney Spears. i can't picture her being anywhere on the radar in twenty years. Madonna my ass. i was talking to my dad about this once. and he was telling me about this blonde teen pop-sensation back in his day who was the biggest thing on the radio then. top of the charts. in every magazine. and within a couple years she was virtually forgotten.

| | | I think madonna will be.
britney maybe not so, as she was just part of the popchick wave that madonna seemed to iconify. |

| | | thats why i make music. something to be remembered by. i dont think it will make me immortal, but it will leave a tiny little mark on something somewhere, i hope.
Immortality through music is reserved for the big famous ones like Elvis and Janis and the Beatles and stuff. |

| | | well, not just icons, and rock'n'roll-hall-of-famers. all journalism becomes dated in the end. but to have a song carried on past your years is immortality enough. Nick Drake did it after his death. to even have a piece of your memory caught in the flux is something. if people can dig up your old records at garage sales, or pawn shops, and find love and mystery in your art, then it's like your feelings have transcended time, and so have you. that may sound hokey. but it's true. when you die, you'll get your name in the paper. they'll make a list of your contributions to the community. they'll talk about friends, and family, and your favourite past-times, and then you will be forgotten like everybody else. that is nothing like the immediacy and presence of a timeless tune.
i didn't mean to make a debate of Madonna. i only brought her up because Britney has been called the next-Madonna before. i suspect Madonna may make a few lasting marks still. and The Beatles, i'm sure.

| | | You know how those oldies stations play all those girl groups from back in the day? The ones with catchy songs but are only played and remembered by those radio listeners? Perfectly forgettable but satisfying at that moment in time. That's what I picture Britney becoming.
Im not sure I can answer this question. The music I mostly listen to is hardly groundbreaking or brilliant lyrically...except for Morrissey, probably. And it'd be such a cop out to say Bob Dylan. |
