| Your Top 10 albums of 2008 Apologies if this has already been started somewhere else - I couldn't see a thread though. Mods, feel free to merge if there is one already.
What are your top 10 albums to be released in 2008? Mine are:
1. Laura Marling - Alas I Cannot Swim: Wonderful folky jangly dark-tinged guitar-pop. Best tracks: Night Terror, Tap At My Window, Crawled Out Of The Sea
2. The Hot Puppies - Blue Hands: Imagine if The Long Blondes had a more melodic singer and better lyrics. Best tracks: King Of England, Dear Brutus, Where The Werewolves Meet
3. Joan As Police Woman - To Survive: A real grower. Beautiful voice and atmosphere. Best tracks: To Be Lonely, To America, Furious
4. Kay Hanley - Weaponize!: Kay goes back to power-pop... lots of these songs have been demoed on the internet for a year or two, but great to hear them mastered and together in one place. Best tracks: Video, Take It Like A Man, Cellars By Starlight
5. Jay Brannan - Goddamned: Cute guy sings songs about boys and why religion is absurd. Sounds reminiscent of Tracy Chapman with more explicit lyrics. Best tracks: Housewife, At First Sight, Goddamned
6. Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue: Completely incongrous track-listing that doesn't really flow, but somehow the album works brilliantly as a whole. Best songs: The Next Messiah, Pretty Bird, Jack Killed Mom
7. Donita Sparks & The Stellar Moments - Transmiticate: Fun, brainless 80s-electro-rock-pop from former L7 frontwoman. Probably the most fun album of the year. Best tracks: Take A Few Steps, Fly Feather Fly, Curtains for Cathy
8. Teddy Thompson - A Piece Of What You Need: Teddy drops the awkward country direction of his last album and throws in a more pop element, nearly recapturing the greatness of his second album, Separate Ways. Best tracks: In My Arms, A Piece Of What You Need, Turning The Gun On Myself
9. Frank Bango - The Sweet Songs Of Decay: Something almost Elvis Costello in his voice, Frank is probably the least well-known artist on my list, but well worth checking out. Best songs: Bunny In A Bunny Suit, Summerdress, Worm Was Wood
10. My Brightest Diamond - A Thousand Shark's Teeth: Not as instantly accessible as her last album, but really stands up over a few listens and grows each time you hear it. Best songs: To Pluto's Moon, From The Top Of The World, Inside A Boy
Other albums I've loved this year:
The Long Blondes - Couples
Letters To Cleo - When Did We Do That?
Aimee Mann - Smilers
Camille - Music Hole
Frida Hyvonen - Silence Is Wild
Phoebe Killdeer & The Short Straws - Weather's Coming
Martha Wainwright - I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too
Amanda Palmer - Who Killed Amanda Palmer?
