Portishead looks forward at Third followup

Portishead looks forward at Third followup

Portishead looks forward at Third followup

By Drew Litowitz on December 18th, 2008

Following Portishead’s eponymous sophomore album, 11 years elapsed before fans were hit with this year’s acclaimed Third. Sure, it was no Smile, but 11 years is a pretty damn long time to wait for a new album. Luckily, the british trip-hoppers are not planning on waiting another decade to release their fourth album, producer and instrumentalist Geoff Barrow told BBC 6:
“When everyone’s had a bit of a break, I think we’re just going to plough onto it. We’ve sat down and we’ve talked about even like the direction and stuff like that … Everyone seems really positive about it.”
Combine this with the band’s comments earlier in the summer, and it certainly seems like we may have another Portishead album on our hands by 2009.

In addition to discussing the band’s current state of affairs, Barrow also provided some reasoning behind Third’s rather extensive delay: “It did take a long time because we just didn’t want to repeat ourselves again really, there’s no real point …We’d actually prefer to stop altogether if we were just going to roll out the old kinda sound really.” Now there’s a group that takes their music seriously. At least laziness wasn’t to blame.

Portishead is also looking forward to doing a more extensive tour, presumably to accompany the new effort.

Geoff Barrow posted a blog on the Portishead myspace page stating :

its been reported that were ploughing into another album straight away next year , it was taken from a interview i did with radio 6.

i said a few things that were taken the wrong way , what i meant was that we intend to write another album and hopefully tour again at some point as we didn't get to as many places as we would of liked to this year.

but we don't know when yet

also i was a little thrown cos i was told it was going to be a prerecorded interview but instead i realised half way through that it was going live to air.

i sounded like a right tit.

and it only clicked afterwards that our single magic doors had been given video of the week??

HANG ON A MIN!!

i am really fuking stupid or are they taking the piss ?

how can a radio station give you video of the week?

they must fuking love it to give us that!

there must be some fuking killer singles out this week to get that...

seeing that theres only one dedicated chain record shop left in england we should be gratfull....

mmmm...

the words "poo hole" and "down the" come to mind.
cheers
geoff

That's a good attitude to have, I suppose. Although some bands can get away with rehashing the same kind of sound without losing their appeal. It's easy to see why Portishead have such a great legacy. They're like Quakers. They only speak when they feel God asks them to lol.

This is very good news anyway.
