Directed By Academy Award® Nominee Julian Schnabel,
Extraordinary Live Performance Of Acclaimed Rock Opera Debuts On DVD From The Weinstein Company and Genius Products
SANTA MONICA, CA – The historic 1973 concert album “Berlin” is brought to the stage for the first time when LOU REED’S BERLIN arrives on DVD September 30th from
Genius Products and The Weinstein Company as part of The Miriam Collection. Former lead singer and songwriter for the innovative group The Velvet Underground, Reed revisits his solo venture “Berlin,” a tragic rock opera about a doomed couple.
A surprising follow-up to his previous, more upbeat album, “Berlin” is riddled with themes of drug use and depression, punctuated by heavy orchestral arrangements and is considered Reed’s greatest solo achievement. Directed by Academy Award® nominee* Julian Schnabel (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly), LOU REED’S BERLIN was filmed in December 2006 at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn, New York and features the legendary singer performing his controversial narrative album live with the divided city of Berlin as the concert’s backdrop. Accompanied by a seven-piece orchestra and featuring performances by guitarist Steve Hunter, who plays on the original album and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, Reed takes the audience into a captivating and enveloping world that is both devastating and beautiful.
LOU REED’S BERLIN DVD will include a Q&A with director Julian Schnabel and will be available for the suggested retail price of $22.95.
