i reckon it would be pretty annoying if they put every genre together in one big section |

| | | One time I was talking to a guy in an Aphex Twin top I'd mistaken for the Half-Life logo (the game), I said something about Episode One and he thought I was on about some obscure EP and said he wasn't a big fan and backed out of the convo. Lucky escape for me there.

| | | I like most of his stuff, but "I care" in particular has not aged very well.
And yeah, of course you can dance to it, you can dance to anything, but it's not typical dance really.
And I don't get what would be annoying about everything just being arranged A-Z. |

And I don't get what would be annoying about everything just being arranged A-Z. | dance music is pretty varied, there isnt really "typical" dance music, theres shit loads of different subgenres which everything aphex twins made fits into (maybe apart from the beatless tunes). there are hundreds of other producers making the same type of dance music as him and if you ever go to nights that play that stuff theyre still dance music raves
i think it would be annoying because unless you knew exactly what you were looking for youd have to browse through loads of genres you arent interested in to find things that youd like |

And it's not like HMV and the like are particularly reliable or consistent in their genre divisions. I don't know, maybe I'm just not a typical record shopper, but I rarely go in thinking "I want to buy something from this vague genre, but I don't really care what it is and I don't know the names of any of the bands in it".
The real reason to genre-ise them is to move you around the store more and keep you in there longer, just like when supermarkets change their layout every 6 months or so. No store likes someone who comes in, knows what they want, and buys it. |

| | | ...plus they can have a targeted discount/new release display for the section, and in practice most people do browse (especially if they can't find what they were looking for) and are more likely to pick out something else in a related genre.
But I think you've already answered your own question?

but my branch should have the cds because my bloody valentine are playing BESTIVAL this week which is quite close to my location!
