What's new and exciting?

I know every few years people start going off about how music is stale and things aren't as good as they were "back then" but does anyone else feel like this is really the case this time?

I just was looking at NME.com and I remember how back in the day when I was just starting high school I used to check NME.com several times a day and there was always something exciting happening. Now I don't even bother because the only people who are ever quoted are the Gallagher brothers- and they're middle aged and have been around for years.

I used to put pictures of the bands I like on my wall. I just realized I haven't done that for 2 years.

Ever since American Apparel became the new uniform for cool and Williamsburg became the new capital of cool it seems like the newer bands are all musically okay but otherwise too boring to care about.

There are no feuds worth writing about anymore. Remember when Jack White got into that fight with the guy from the Von Bondies? That sort of thing doesn't seem to happen. This new batch of Indie/Alt/Whatever are all farts who sit around complimenting each other and do nothing that makes music publications worth reading.

What do you think? Is this just a sign that I'm getting old? Has anyone else noticed that although there are plenty of new bands coming out with good music, there are none that are as exciting as say... the Libertines or The Manics? Music seems to have shifted to shitty ipod commercial bands like The Ting Tings and The Black Kids that become big one hit wonders get a whole bunch of magazines covers and then the story isn't even worth reading because they are such boring bands, and the music sounds dated about a week after it's been out.

So... What bands are not just musically good but are also exciting? What recent bands have made you want to put their picture on your wall?

For me the last band was the Cribs. The first half of this decade was so amazing for exciting bands. Everything seemed so new and exciting. The second half seems to be all hype and nothing else.

I don't really get excited about new bands anymore these days. I love music, but it's more about new albums by bands I love, and hoping they will be good. I do believe this is a case of being older as you said. I no longer have pictures of bands on my walls, and I hardly ever get excited about b-sides and the likes, unless it's a band I really love. Mind you, I don't think that many bands are to get excited about anyways, they all seem to be rip-offs of rip-offs. These days, if you want to find something worth listening, you have to dig very deep in the indie ground, as everybody loves to call themselves indie these days. Soon enough Tokio Hotel will be called indie (if they haven't already!).

Have not gotten over the luxury of living in the nineties.

Music after 98-99 seems pretty shit by comparison. They captured a sound that was sooo appealing it made my chest hurt.

I love nineties music - but - it's all rinsed nowadays. It's nice to put on the odd nineties classic like Nevermind or Celebrity Skin once in a while and reminisce over the good times we had and the choice was just spectacular! Actually, perhaps we can thank the boy bands popularity of the time like East 17 and others that the industry went after - now the industry thinks OUR music back then is what we should promote and the bands are just too slick and bring home to mommy...

Commercial alt sucks.

The Maggots are about the only band whose cd I can listen to completely and really like.

I like a band from Spain called the Gurus too. I can't really think of much else though.

Those are both in the "Garage" genre though, which is really the only "new" music that I can stand these days.

I'm so rubbish at finding new bands, I always end up buying albums years after they were released. I'd still say that music now is as exciting as ever, I just don't judge it by who is popular or in the NME this week. I'm sure NME in 1992 was full of shite bands too.
It's always great to discover new music wether it was recorded this year or twenty years ago. I guess the best way to find exciting new bands is to go to lots of local gigs, and get to see them before anyone else knows about them and then when they get popular you can say 'yeah they used to be good'

The only band that's come out in the last 2 or 3 years that I've gotten really (really really) excited about was giant drag...and that hasn't worked out very well.

i saw a hilarious interview with annie hardy the otherday, have you seen it?
here i'll find you a link.
i thought theyd been around longer?

i get excited about some music, but all the bands you hear about tend to be indie trendy sort of stuff. the whole psych movement in the US is really exciting for me as well- stuff like brightblack morning light and woods family creeps and stuff.

i don't know, im thinking really hard and i guess there just aren't a whole lot of new bands that i fucking love. i probably just have to dig a little deeper. i'm very pleased with the recent success of kaki king though!

For me lately it's been bands that I've really loved that no one else "gets." Mando Diao blow my fucking mind.

If you're talking about "buzz bands," Vampire Weekend really are good. They're not great, but they're really good.

If you think about it, from any past great era of rock music, there are only ten or less bands that are really remembered anyway.

pikelet is cute and verrry cool, but i didn't really like her when i saw her
it was a bit awkward i think, because she was a support act in a large venue.

did you see beach house? i had tickets but missed them, it was a tragedy. im REALLY upset about it.

i'll look up mark barrage.
what is your bf's band like?

no, i missed beach house! i totally forgot they were playing and then i saw a poster and was like shit! but by then it was sold out.

look up popolice while you're looking at barrage. popolice = amazing.

umm his band and kind of like... post punk sonic youth noise/drone kind of thing. lots of delay pedals and feedback. they're doing really well though, they're supporting the reptiles for their record launch in a few weeks which is going to be pretty big.
