Juliana Hatfield - How to Walk Away

I just realized that the album has no thread yet and she's one of the best, most overlooked, underrated presences in indie rock and to think that she's threatening to make HTWA her last album like ever and just be a writer is insane to me. She's saying it would be her last album if this one doesn't do well. OMG!

The Fact Remains (mp3)

This Lonely Love (video)

"She's so heavy. She's so sweet. Boston's Juliana Hatfield swings both ways, and fans of Hatfield the ace pop tunesmith will want to make a big fat circle around August 19th on their calendars..."Shining On" will make you feel all happy and sad, the way a song should."

- Joan Anderman of the Boston Globe

“She was a willowy beauty with charming shyness and a slightly tragic air.” So says Brett Milano, of Juliana Hatfield in her starting-out days, in his recent book The Sound Of Our Town: A History Of Boston Rock+Roll.

Juliana Hatfield — no less an intriguing, compelling character today — has been working as a recording artist for twenty years. With the release of How To Walk Away, her 10th solo album, she again proves herself to be an uncompromising artist with impeccable pop instincts, a disdain for artifice, a completely original voice, and a contrarian streak.

Starting in her teens, with her first band, critically-acclaimed, Boston-based indie rock outfit the Blake Babies (who self-released their first album before moving on to the North Carolina-based independent Mammoth Records), Hatfield has paved her own unique way, evolving with each subsequent record. She signed to Atlantic Records as a solo artist and racked up a string of mid-nineties modern-rock hits (“My Sister,” “Spin The Bottle,” “Universal Heartbeat”) before leaving the label in 1998. Hatfield was then the first signing to Zoë Records, a Rounder Records imprint. Zoë's fourth and final Hatfield release was 2004’s In Exile Deo, named one of that year’s 10 best albums by Jon Pareles in The New York Times.

In 2005 Hatfield came full circle, back to full DIY independence, starting her own label (Ye Olde Records) and releasing the catchy but somewhat abrasive Made In China (“her most urgent, refreshingly unpolished output in years,” said Time Out New York).

How To Walk Away, also on Ye Olde Records, finds Hatfield singing in top form. “Finally,” she says, “I feel like my voice has grown into itself and I’m not struggling so much against its little-girl-ness.”

The album features guest appearances by two other distinctive vocalists: Psychedelic Furs’ Richard Butler on “This Lonely Love” and Nada Surf’s Matthew Caws on “Such A Beautiful Girl.” Other featured guest musicians were Fountains Of Wayne guitarist Jody Porter (some lead guitar); Jeff Hill, of Rufus Wainwright’s band, on bass; and Ethan Eubanks of the Grey Race on drums. Tracy Bonham guested on violin, and Jason Hatfield, Juliana’s brother, played piano on two songs, which he co-wrote (“Remember November” and “Such A Beautiful Girl”).

How To Walk Away was recorded at Stratosphere Sound, the NYC studio co-owned by Adam Schlesinger (Fountains Of Wayne), James Iha (formerly of Smashing Pumpkins), and Andy Chase (of revered alt-rock/pop band Ivy), who produced the album. How To Walk Away is evocative, layered, and unhurried yet Chase has managed to retain Hatfield’s essential rawness of spirit, smoothing out some rough edges but not all. Witness, for example, the loose, danceable “Now I’m Gone,” sung (and played) by Hatfield in one inspired improvisational take. And while she has frequently drawn from personal experience in the past, these songs are some of her most candid ever.

Out August 19th.

Track listing:

1. The Fact Remains
2. Shining On
3. This Lonely Love
4. My Baby...
5. Just Lust
6. Now I'm Gone
7. Remember November
8. So Alone
9. Such A Beautiful Girl
10. Law of Nature

Her last 2 records Made In China and In Exile Deo were mint!! She's got a voice i could listen to all day and her lyrics are so apt! The louder she gets the better for me.

i love her. but, albums don't really sell these days. and julianna has never been a big seller. but she does well for an indie artist. so, she needs to get the fuck over it. all of these people chasing the dragon that was being a platinum artist in the nineties.

if hatfield promoted herself better and toured more than NYC, Chicago, and MA she may could pay the bills. many people love her but don't know she is still around. and the people that should know her don't. get a band. get a publicist that is worth a fuck. get a few magazine covers. stop depending soley on your boring myspace blogs and hit the fucking road. and she should stick to touring. because if her writing career is anything like her yawn of a blog, then she needs to hit the welfare lines or understand McDonald's is always taking applications.

and she went down two notches in my book with this if this album doesn't do well it will be my last threat. of course, i didn't read the article you posted because i was afraid she wrote it. and i really tried to read her blogs that explained the meanings of her songs. but, they were really long and boring.

sorry about the rant. i really do love her music. and this long winded post is nothing compared to her writing skills. and i did it in her honor.

A little harsh there, aren't you? She does tour quite a bit. She has been here to Arlington, VA numerous times with her various albums.
How is she supposed to get all these magazine covers? She's not famous like Nicole Kidman or Lindsay Lohan or whoever they usually put on covers. Unfortunately the media worships celebrity and is interested in people who get arrested or are in the tabloids for their personal lives, not who is the best songwriter or musician.
She seems like one of those people who is a little on the shy side. Not everyone is great at interviews and writing clever one liners.

well the magazines i am talking about are not US or OK or even Vogue.

and yes. i was a bit harsh. but the whole i am not releasing another album if this doesn't do well blah blah blah bullshit. it is a way to try to get people to buy an album. but it is not a good way to do it. albums don't really sell these days, do they?

i did say she was talented as a musician. but, her writing is not very entertaining. and she could get on covers of magazines. and on radio shows. and she limits where she tours. i mean getting your name out there is hard fucking work. and hatfield doesn't play huge venues. so, she can easily get her name on any bill. she could also get on the bill as an opening act for a bigger band. and she mainly tours the East. if she plays solo (like she does sometimes), she could go all over the world. it wouldn't cost much to carry her equipment or to rent it where she goes. she could totally promote herself with just the Spin the Bottle single. I mean, my ex just went and saw Tiffany. And she hasn't sold an album since 1985. So, it can be done. And Tiff also had her ass on celebrity fit club to promote herself. I mean, I wouldn't do that, but she could at least get some buzz about herself. If she had the right people behind her. Don't be an egomaniac and think it is all going to come to you. Which I know she has worked her ass off. but, not very many other people do. i have kept up with her over the years.

btw, i think she should hire a backing band. even if they are a shitty garage band. just a sidenote i forgot to put in.

So Juliana is playing in London on October 10... can't decide whether to go or not. When I like Juliana I really like her, but when I don't I find her really really irritating! So it all depends whether or not I'm having a Juliana day at the time

Although if she plays Choose Drugs it'd all be worth it.

Ah. Just checked my diary and resolved the crisis. I already have Amanda Palmer tickets for that night so I won't be going to Juliana.

She's actually been getting quite a bit of press for this album. She's been featured in Spin and written about in Oprah's magazine and some other stuff and she's also going to be on Jay Leno on Monday, August 25.

Anyway, I can't wait for this album. I love her.

Ugh, but the fact that her San Francisco show is 21+ depresses me since I can't go.

i have to say she didn't say it like a threat. she implied it. but it felt like a threat to me because i looooove her so much. i've read all her blogs and they're all interesting and yeah, long winded but has a lot to share about her experiences and stuff. she was just talking about her song, no answer, from hey babe. and i love reading that she was influenced by throwing muses at the time and thinks it was proggy, the album. heh.

i hope how to walk away gets some exposure from tv shows. like grey's anatomy or something.

You can't deny that she has gotten better and better with each album she's released. She's extremely underrated an artist... but i guess she likes that

I love that song! I hope she does it as well.
I think the suggestion for her to be on some kind of reality show like Celebrity Fit Club is a terrible idea. Okay, it would get her attention, but it would totally destroy her credibility as a serious musician. It's great to be successful, but at the end of the day if you want to be taken seriously you have to be dignified and become a total media whore. You can't compare a brilliant songwriter like Julianna to a cheesy teen star like Tiffany.
And Julianna does get publicity and critical raves. There were two glowing reviews of the new album in Billboard and Entertainment Weekly.
Success is great, but it's not everything in life. It's more important to make music you care about and be happy with yourself and how you conduct yourself.
If she chooses to quit the music business, that's up to her. And we should be thankful for the music she did release.
