The Acorn is the ongoing musical project of Rolf Klausener, Jeff Debutte, Keiko Devaux, T. Jeffrey Malecki and Howie Tsui. Glory Hope Mountain, the band's sophomore effort and followup to The Pink Ghosts and Tin Fist EP, is a touching homage to the life story of Gloria Montoya Esperanza(pictured below), as told by her son, Rolf Klausener. An intensely personal and heartfelt record, Glory Hope Mountain is part historical narrative and part surreal fairy tale. Based on interviews recorded in 2006 and recorded over 9 months, the sometimes haunting, sometimes exuberant tones of the album follow both hope and tragedy in Montoya's native Honduras - a mother dying in childbirth, flash floods, an abusive father - and an ultimately life-affirming move to Montreal in the 1970s.
Press:
"Glory Hope Mountain is an intimate and beautifully orchestrated album with heartfelt stories of personal tragedy and triumph." - NPR
"dynamic shifts and evocative instrumentation...Klausener crafts...an allegorical narrative of strength, perserverence, love, and redemption. Epic and satisfying" - Pitchfork
"loose-mic, intimate vocals. The undulating layers of string arrangements show much internalization occurred by all the members of the Acorn in Montoya's life story. It's almost folkloric." -SPIN.com Artist of the Day
"an album that swiftly sidesteps the usual trappings that bog down most concept albums, thanks primarily to Klausener's skill as a lyricist and a storyteller, as he manages to convey deeply emotional subject matter without resorting to melodrama. And to the credit of the rest of the band, the musical arrangements follow suit." - PopMatters
"subtly sweeping and agreeably melodic" - Stereogum
"Gorgeous." - Gorilla vs. Bear
"Lovely and ambitious" - Chromewaves
"an album bejeweled by its details, consistently listenable and saving some of its most accessible moments for last, it's tough to let go of what I had long considered a local secret. Make your hometown proud, boys. We're rooting for you." - CokeMachineGlow
