My favorite bar in the LA area is
Alex's Bar in Long Beach. It's probably a little bit south from where you're going to be staying, but it's worth the trek. It's a cool laid back atmosphere, mostly punk bands and the place has good beer. Free parking in back of venue.
There's
Safari Sam's in West Hollywood. I don't know what you're going to do for transportation, but this venue actually has a parking lot/free parking and that's an absolute rarity for West Hollywood. There's a lot of scenester types at this place, but they usually have good bands and the venue itself is very cool, so oh well.
The
Spaceland in Silverlake is decent. Usually has indie, emo, experimental and occasionally punk bands play there. Lots of scenesters and pretentious types there though. My friend saw Keanu Reeves hanging out there a few years ago.
The Echo/ Echoplex (Echoplex is a separate venue right below the Echo). Same crowd and types of bands as The Spaceland pretty much. Good (free) street parking.
The Scene Bar in Glendale is pretty cool. Less young pretentious scenester types and more old school rockers. Good bands play here. Free street parking.
Then there's the obvious ones like
The Roxy (the Rainbow Bar and Grill is right next door to it),
The Whisky A-Go-Go, and The
Viper Room all located in West Hollywood but the parking is horrible (expect to dish out 13 bucks if you can't find a meter). However, if you're into music and you're visiting Los Angeles you probably should check these places out... I live in LA so I hate the Sunset Strip, but these places are historical and worth checking out (the Roxy and Whiskey at least) if you haven't before.
Most of the venues dont have shows up for May yet. Bands here usually schedule their shows about a month before the event, so you'll have to check back.
Have fun!
