| Ahead of the pack once again. I'm kind of over American Life, but I appreciated it when it first came out.
It sucked how every review made fun of her rapping, which actually wasn't that bad. It wasn't good either, more like an effect you can love or leave. Like the synth rev when the sun comes out in "Rain" or the flamenco break in "Deeper & Deeper". The rapping wasn't a big part of the album at all, but that was all you read about.
I finally listened to M.I.A.'s first album, which everybody was cumming over and found her rapping FAR more embarrassing. Maybe there's a valid message in there, but it sounds fucking ridiculous.
The real flaw of American Life is that most of the hooks aren't quite strong enough to support her preaching. If she went more in a You Can Dance to the Kabbalah direction, it could have been a great record. edit: or a far worse record, i'm not sure.
Confessions sucks because it's her first throwaway. American Life got her stranded on the island old people go to make their art records nobody gives a fuck about, and Confessions just had to be the makeshift raft that got her the back to civilization.
I think the new record will be decent. American Life was ambitious but not very much fun. Confessions was a party album, but played it way too safe. It seems as though the new one will have a different sound (for a Madonna record at least) but no shit lyrics about the tree of life or why she used to think being famous was good but just realized it isn't, even though she's come to that exact conclusion at least ten times in the past.
