The White Stripes - Sued Again

The White Stripes sued for sampling from reporter's radio show

The Canadian Press

Montreal — A former Quebec radio host is accusing The White Stripes of sampling from her radio show and is suing the indie rock band for $70,000. Dominique Payette is also seeking an injunction ordering the band to remove the De Stijl album from store shelves. Payette alleges the song Jumble, Jumble begins with a 10-second excerpt from her call-in show, where she seems to be fielding a call from a girl.

How unnecessary and vindictive. If it's from a radio show isn't it for the public to hear anyway?

this is idiotic in so many different ways, i can't even begin to....

apparently she wants to be known as a dumbass to the masses than be respected and appreciated for her work by the public on a smaller scale.

Yeah well that's what you get when you don't have permission to use someone else's works in your own works. Even an acknowledgement on their record sleeve would avoid having to be sued as it means they're recognising that they're using the works.

The White Stripes are shite anyway.

but that's not what she's suing for. because she can't.
and that's not why she's suing.

and those are just a few of the reasons why this ordeal is ridiculous.

I heard about this a few weeks ago and thought it was completely over the top. It is only 10 seconds worth of material and it's not even an integral part of the material. Asking for the record to be taken off shelves is completely overblown. I will however say this, The White Stripes have somewhat set the tone for being sued for 'stealing' other people's work by sueing people who they believe 'stole' some of their ideas. It's a Catch 22. [See I'm not completely one eyed! haha!].

Well they shouldn't have used the clip without clearance. That's just fucking stupid. But as it so often is with celebrity lawsuits like this, what she's asking for is ludicrous.

Give the cunt a 25 dollar Red Lobster gift card and a copy of Jugs' sex tape as compensation. Next.

She is likely figuring she is asking for a small enough amount to settle and using the removal as a way to push it through faster. My friend's band once used an audio clip of a member of O-Town being berated, but they only have a small cult audience so no one was the wiser. Considering how long De Stijl has been available it took her a while...

Have we learned nothing from all of the rappers being sued. Sylent green is pee pole.

i suppose she has the right, although the thought of pulling de stijl from the shelves is ridiculous.

i doubt when they recorded this album in their living room they even suspected it would sell more than a hundred copies... and probably had no idea there would ever be an issue with using some random 5 second snippet of a public radio broadcast.

This is true. She obviously didn't care until they made a stack load of money.

no, some of their first album was recorded in their attic, most of it at a studio called Ghetto Recorders.

de stijl was recorded entirely at home. (third man studio = jack white's living room)

I'm pretty certain Mfc is right because I remember Jack saying that recording at home was really distracting to him. They even had some guy just wander into the house off the street because he heard them playing. De Stijl was home recorded.
