Dolly Parton - Backwoods Barbie

Did anyone else pick this up?

She covers Fine Young Cannibals and it is pretty crazy. The CD case is kind of weird because various things on it are raised...it kind of trips me out every single time I touch it.

And of course, she looks even more like a Barbie than usual in all the pictures and has a bunch of pictures of Dolly Barbies in the CD case.

I like it. It is Dolly Parton, you know?

I don't think it is particularly remarkable for a Dolly Parton album, but it is at least as good as most of her albums are.

You have me curious. I much prefer her earlier stuff, but I did like the theme to Trans America.

Backwoods Barbie sort of plays out like a career sampling. A lot of the songs feel like outtakes from her previous musical phases. There are bluegrass covers of pop songs (Drives Me Crazy) 70s country (Backwoods Barbie), 80s pop country (Cologne, Made Of Stone) and Better Get To Livin is very reminiscent of the theme from Transamerica.

All in all it is a very good album. It's a bit erratic and needs more focus but there are some excellent songs.

My favorites are Cologne, Tracks of My Tears, Backwoods Barbie, and Better Get To Livin.
