After four inactive years and a general assumption that they were kaput, Rancid is back in the studio with longtime co-conspirator and Epitaph head honcho Brett Gurewitz manning the knobs. Considering the road miles the band has logged and the various ups and downs of their career, Rancid's lineup has remained remarkably steady, though Brandon Steineckert replaced Brett Reed on drums last year. The new record is slated to be released later this year on Hellcat/Epitaph.
After 2003's Indestructible, the band has concentrated on various solo projects. Guitarist Lars Frederiksen released his second solo album of street punk, Viking (Hellcat). Singer Tim Armstrong finished his second full-length, Haunted Cities (La Salle), with his moonlighting mashers, the Transplants and also recorded a 2007 solo LP, A Poet's Life (Hellcat), which featured the Aggrolites backing him on some roots reggae material. Bassist Matt Freeman kept himself busy by touring with Social Distortion and working on the Transplants' CD.
