Sony BMG will launch its Platinum MusicPass series next week, making digital album cards available at major retailers like Best Buy, Target and Fred's. For $12.99, users will be able to buy a gift card with artist-specific artwork and a scratch-off PIN number that allows them to download albums via MusicPass.com. More stores are expected to join suit as the series takes off, including Trans World and Winn-Dixie in the US and Best Buy, CD Plus and Wal-Mart in Canada. Among the first albums getting the digital card treatment are Bruce Springsteen's Magic, John Mayer's Continuum and Tony Bennett's Duets. The Platinum MusicPass confirms reports that the label was finalizing plans to sell songs without digital rights management, the last of the four majors to join.
