music videos ruin songs.

Discuss.
first exemple that comes to my mind is Enjoy the silence, I've just seen the video yesterday for the first time after thinking it's such a great song. sucks sucks sucks. I cannot even think of ONE music video that really moved me, okay I can think of one but I wont name it because I will go against me...but in majority they pretty much destroy the song.
oh and if the song sucks (I was inspired by the new falloutboy song) it's even worse. I cannot picture one single person in the world to find this artistic. Michael did it first and Michael did it better...somewhat.

hmm. i pay very little attention to music videos in general, unless it's a band/artist that i really like. some videos i love almost more than the actual songs.

eg: the celebrity skin video. there's not much to it, but i love it. i'd rather watch the video than listen to the song. actually, it's the same story with malibu.

anyway --

confess. i want to know what it is.

I don't think so at all.

Videos are insignificant enough that the bad ones can easily be overlooked if you like the song. I hate the last two Madonna videos and but it hardly ever occours to me to think about them.

Whereas with "Erotica" or "Don't Tell Me" I always think of the videos. It doesn't make me like the songs any better, just compliments them well.

Seeing a band i like being posey wankers with shakeycam FX in some music video took a few bands down some notches for me it annoys me that people have the chance to work with such expensive equipment, yet choose to do nothing remotely interesting.

it's almost as bad as paris hilton being allowed in a recording studio

They totally ruin the experience for me. When I listen to a song, I like to have whatever mood, feeling, imagery and whatever that the song gives my mind, rather than some contrived images that everyone has seen.

That sounds really gay, but it's true.

they shouldn't try to do anything interesting. trying to be interesting is the first step towards being tacky.

the best example i can think of is with garbage. their video for "stupid girl" is simple and tasteful.
whereas with "special" they tried to be interesting, incorporated effects and it's a laughable piece of shit. maybe i was lying before about videos being insignificant, because that video is the point where garbage went from being serious artists to a dumb person's band in my estimation.

although "push it" is complicated and quite good. but how often does that happen? it's better to play it safe unless you're madonna or REM and your good stuff to shit ratio is in your favor.

i think sinead o'connor's video for "nothing compares 2 U" is brilliant, and it's basically just head shots and scultures. and the tear. but nothing fancy.

some songs if they didn't have videos i'd never have noticed.
the videos can sometimes bring a new audience to a song.

no but I was watching a RHCP interview and they were actually agreeing that a video ruins a song somewhat, they basically admitted not to be satisfied with any video unless maybe Give it away now...?!(i thought it was shitty) and then they were like <this new video(dany california) will be the best thing you've ever seen blah blah blah>... The video sucks no offense. Okay so it's them portraying rock eras but it's nothing that great. in the interview(which was made before the video came out) they were totally bragging about it and etc...
Same goes for Billy Talent,I think their music is actually good they're pretty original, fast, riffs are fun, etc. They started talking about how they wanna do something new because everything is the same on tv now...their video is okay. I think it's the fact that they're all so conseited about it that disappoints me. or the fact that they think it's great when it clearly isn't.

Absolutely not. Videos are not bad, they are a totally new way of selling music or for artists to express themselves.

Bad videos can ruin the song and good videos can either totally capture it or enhance it.

The greatest video artist has got to be Madonna. Almost all her videos either capture her songs or totally enhance and complement them.

Some of her videos are pretty much movies totally independent from the songs. Bad Girl is one example. That is totally a short film rather than a video. Justify My Love takes the song to a whole new level. It adds so much to it.

Cherish totally captures the mood of the song. Like A Prayer, American Life question you. Borderline totally captures adolescent love. Frozen is a masterpiece, The Power of Goodbye enhances the song's mood greatly, I mean the list goes on and on. She just took the video opportunity and totally owned it.

another exemple that comes tomy mind: Wake me up when september ends.
cliche after cliche.
so knowing my horrible musical taste I used to be a green day fanatic back in the dookie era and etc. So I purchased the cd, fell in love with the song way before it came out as this stupid teenage dramafest. It was number one on charts for the whole end of the freaking summer and it was not exactly worth it no offense.

I guess if you have to try to be interesting, you aren't all that interesting to begin with.

speaking of video clips that make you go 'wtf', i watched Bonnie Tylers 'total eclipse of the heart' on youtube last night.

homo choir boys & glowing eyes, she must have been on some cool drugs.

garbages best video is Only happy when it rains. those little kids freak me out at the end.

I haven't got the attention span to watch a lot of music videos. If i don't like it i'll just change the channel. Though there are a lot of videos i enjoy & they tend to be by a lot of the same artists/bands. I love most of the Smashing Pumpkins videos, Tori Amos (Spark is my favourite clip ever), most of Hole's were really good + others.

Honestly i've never had a song ruined by a shitty video. I was TOTALLY let down by the video for Cross Bones Style by Cat Power, what a huge waste of time, but i still like the song.

the moment i saw this thread, i thought instantly of depeche mode. amazing amazing band, i love them, but mostly shitty videos. not they they effect the song in my eyes, but absolutely dont live up to them in any respect. too bad since anton corbijn did most of theirs and he's a genius photographer and artist. too bad.

although, any excuse to see dave gahan strutting around is ok with me.lol

another band with even worse track record for videos is blind melon. oh puke, i cant stand to watch ANY of them. and i love the band!

the chili peppers on the other hand, have pretty excellent videos in comparison to most bands

yeah well when the people in the video are attractive I don't mind.
my favorite video for the longest time used to be Ana's song. it was captivating
now I just like the new taking back sunday video coz it is more decent than any other of their videos and because Adam is pleasant to look at. I could watch it over and over again. I agree it's just catchy and the concept is not exactly magnificent, but he makes it beautiful.
