| Under the radar, cool bands you have recently become aware of
It doesnt have to be a new band.
My best friend recently turned me on to Bongwater and I couldn't believe I had never heard of them. The lyrics, sung/spoken by the actress Ann Magnuson are sharp and cutting, political and funny in a typically cynical 1990's style. But this band is not typical. Their opus, 'folk song' is over 9 minutes long and covers a wide range of subjects (including a hilarious dig about the film Pretty Woman) but it still keeps your attention and actually has cohesive meaning.
Maybe this band is more well known than i tjink it is but a lot of people may have missed out due to their age. Their poularity peaked in 1990 or 1991 i think. Check out their album "the power of pussy" to get started. Or just download "folk song".
