Matmos, Glenn Kotche Bang On A Can

Story by: Jessica Suarez

The Bang On A Can Marathon, which laughs in the ignorant faces of other, so-called "diverse" music festivals, will take place June 4 in New York City. This year's Marathon will include San Fransisco duo Matmos (playing with drum ensemble So Percussion), Wilco's Glenn Kotche (debuting a new experimental drum project), Amiina and Anony Braxton, among many others. By the way, the "many others" part includes, according to the press release, "the punk rock-Mongolian throat singing hybrid of Yat Kah, collaborations combining Indonesian Gamelan music with a full-blown orchestra and the famed British soundtrack composer Michael Nyman with the Bang On A Can All-Stars and jazz-punk gurus Gutbucket."
Bang On A Can, an organization founded by three experimental composers, produces events like this Marathon and presents other concerts of new compositions in New York City. This year's Marathon takes place at the World Financial Center and is, for the first time, completely free, thanks to sponsorship by the River To River Festival and World Financial Center Arts And Events.
