| | | gwen is sort of a really good lyricist now bry or somebody clever post something really piss poor she's written to make me look like an asshole. i'm not saying it's all good stuff.
but i've always related to her no doubt lyrics, more than probably anybody else. although fiona apple can be scarily accurate.
pj harvey is amazing, but she works more in fantasies and storytelling. i already know how to get angry and to want revenge, so her (early) music doesn't offer anything other than entertainment. which isn't to say i'm not grateful for it. not sure what the fuck she's on about since TBYML, although i guess 'stories' seems fairly straightforward and honest.
courtney just writes shit that sounds good. and it's all good in a way a sad movie is good. part of entertainment is having your emotions manipulated a little.
but gwen's lyrics (especially on return of saturn) depress me. possibly because i see them more as reporting than entertainment. everything is about her boyfriend lying and cheating on her. and how she would still rather be with him than without.
if you've ever found out somebody you care about has been cheating on you, think of the instant wanting to vomit then die feeling that hits you.
wanting to cut off the person's legs or have them lick your injuries can do nothing for you at this point. possibly after some times passes, but you have to spend some time being totally fucked.
then comes the shit about whether you should make a break and move on or try to make it last.
too many songs advocate moving on, expressing yourself, respecting yourself blah blah blah. but it's never that easy, and i don't even believe it's always for the best.
gwen stayed with the guy. on rocksteady she seems a little more relaxed. she still doesn't totally trust the guy, still has doubts about whether it will last, but can appreciate the good things about him & and also recognize her own power. he isn't with her out of charity.
i haven't heard much of her solo stuff, so won't discuss that.
i do think she was fairly underrated as a lyricist in the no doubt days. she may not be a fantastic poet, but she's decent enough as a wordsmith and gets points for honesty and accuracy. |

Her solo stuff though is all about her money, her clothing line and saying Harajuku as many times as she possibly can in a short space of time.

| | | If I was a rich girl
See, I'd have all the money in the world, if I was a wealthy girl
No man could test me, impress me, my cash flow would never ever end
Cause I'd have all the money in the world, if I was a wealthy girl
Think what that money could bring
I'd buy everything
Clean out Vivienne Westwood
In my Galliano gown
No, wouldn't just have one hood
A Hollywood mansion if I could
Please book me first class to my fancy house in London town
All the riches baby, won't mean anything
All the riches baby, don't bring what your love can bring
All the riches baby, won't mean anything
Don't need no other baby
Your lovin' is better than gold and I know
If I was rich girl
See, I'd have all the money in the world, if I was a wealthy girl
No man could test me, impress me, my cash flow would never ever end
Cause I'd have all the money in the world, if I was a wealthy girl
I'd get me four Harajuku girls to
Inspire me and they'd come to my rescue
I'd dress them wicked, I'd give them names
Love, Angel, Music, Baby
Hurry up and come and save me
All the riches baby, won't mean anything
All the riches baby, don't bring what your love can bring
All the riches baby, won't mean anything
Don't need no other baby
Your lovin' is better than gold and I know

Come together all over the world
From the hoods of Japan Harajuku girls
What? It's all love
What? Give it up
What? (shouldn't matter) What?
Come together all over the world
From the hood of Japan Harajuku girls
What? It's all the love
What? Give it up
What? (shouldn't matter)
What happened to my life? Turned up side down
Chicks dat blew ya mind, ding, it's the second round
Original track and ting (ooh)
You know you can't buy these things (no)
See Stefani and her L.A.M.B I rock the fetish people you know who I am
Yes ma'am, we got the style that's wicked
I hope you can all keep up
We climbed all the way from the bottom to the top
now we ain't gettin' nothing but love
If I was rich girl
See, I'd have all the money in the world, if I was a wealthy girl
No man could test me, impress me, my cash flow would never ever end

| | | What's funny is that she said someone would do that in her post, and then they still did it. How unoriginal.
I mostly know Tragic Kingdom too, so I don't know. |

| | | i'll admit that her lyrics in ND are OK but her solo lyrics are lame. the closest she gets to a decent song is "early winter" which should have been a single.

| | | Actually I have to say I agree.
Just her topics for lyrics on her solo stuff... not as good.
But I'd say she's really good with expressing herself on the No Doubt CDs. Especially because she wasn't as repetitive then as far as overusing phrases and words. Now she mentions LAMB and Love Angel Music Baby too much.
Now that I think about it... the No Doubt lyrics were really good just because even though there was nothing cryptic or mysterious they never sounded too plain or awkward. She was just really straight up honest and easy to empathize with. And in a lot of her songs she was hurt... but it didn't seem self-pitying or miserable. |

| | | my three year old loves her.
i think her work with no doubt is honest and accessible. her solo stuff is infectious, but kinda like the flu. im used to it now, bc seth wants to hear LAMB every damn time we are in the car, but i definitely prefer no doubt. gwen is disco madonna. i guess madonna is disco madonna as well.

| | | Poor Gwen. Atleast...well as far as im aware, she's stop writing songs about her love for Tony. It had gotten a little too much. As for Gavin, i guess we have a few more albums of him to come!

| | | i think her songwriting now is pretty deliberate. her kiddie lyrics are in the concept. but she's capable of writing great songs. "early winter" is shockingly awesome. |
