| | | Favorite Garbage Album? Absolute Garbage is released in a few weeks, and as a way to give a proper excuse to make such a thread, I am going to say that I am making this in honor of the new greatest hits collection.
Alot of people seem to like the debut and dislike Version 2.0. I completely disagree.
1. Version 2.0
2. Bleed Like Me
3. Garbage
3. beautifulgarbage
But even their worst album is better than 99% of the other shit out there.

I don't like BLM at all, save for Metal Heart and Run Baby Run.

is there any news about a b-side album? or shirleys solo effort... |

| | | I am a beautifulgarbage lover. I know many think this is their worst and most uneven release, but a good portion of the songs are undeniable, very pristine and make the album....Cherry Lips, Drive you Home, Cup of Coffee, Shut Your Mouth etc.
And of course Version 2.0 is tied with BG. Nothing can be said of this album that hasn't been said before, it is sheer perfection. |

But, they're all good, in one way or another. BLM was ranked last, because it's a little redundant at times. |

| No, yes, no and no (most of the time).
"Drive You Home" and "So Like a Rose" are the only songs with any life to them, and even they can get tiresome.
"Cherry Lips" is total cadaver pop. They get credit for trying, but play it next to something truly undeniable like "Into the Groove" and it shows itself for the dud it is. It reminds me of an Al Gore type at a club trying to dance. I think they relied way too heavily on the going for broke pop song gimmick and not enough time on actually coming up with a good pop song.
"Cup of Coffee" is too ridiculous to be taken seriously. Bad breakup, blah blah blah, we've all been there. It doesn't justify those Psycho shower scene violins or whatever the fuck they are and the most incredibly overwrought lyrics I've ever heard. Hard to believe this is all a woman who was in her late 30's at the time had to contribute to the canon of love gone wrong songs.
"Shut Your Mouth" sounds like a watered down Version 2.0 outtake. I find myself wishing there were more songs like this on the album, which doesn't say much for the rest of the songs.
What else do I hate? There's those back to back abortions, "Can't Cry These Tears Anymore" and "Till the Day I Die"...It sounds like the band was trying to meet a bredth requirement of some sort. Which is admirable I suppose. It's just too bad they shit the bed so badly in the process. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. And it wasn't broke.
"Silence Is Golden" was originally going to be the new track on the b-side album or something and surfaced as a live track long before the album came out. My impression at the time was that they were trying to sound like just another band, and not doing a very good job at it.
That's one of the main things I hate with the third and fourth Garbage albums. They mistake being mediocre for being organic.
"Parade" is possibly my least favorite Garbage song. I don't understand why it even exists. |

| | | Sorry for missing the point of the thread. Here are my favorites, so everyone can fuck off with that I don't like shit nonsense:
Garbage: I don't listen to it much anymore, but it's the one I loved the most at the time. It's possible I've never been more excited about a song than I was hearing "Queer" the first bunch of times. And then I got the album and it became my absolute favorite thing ever for a year or so.
Version 2.0: This was so good it never really gave me a chance to bitch about the departure from the first album sound. "Push It" and "You Look So Fine" alone make this a great piece of work.
Bleed Like Me: Don't really care about this one, but at least you can play it straight through as decent background noise. Sometimes it beats listening to the radio, but just barely. Which is more than can be said for beautifulgarbage.
beautifulgarbage: I even hate the lower case alloneword, lame play on the band name title. Fuck off. Some of these songs would have made cool b-sides. Too bad about all the filler.
Oh yeah, I forget to mention "Breaking Up the Girl" on my above hate list. This is what music is going to sound like when it's all made by robots. |

| | | shirley deliahed the band by hacking off all her hair during her turn of the century divorce/bout with premature menopause.
the divorce was kept secret for years, so i guess all those songs were autobiographical afterall.
"13 Times Forever" with that "gave you ammunition to play the game and to fuck other women" was probably about her husband. And it sounded like the marriage was in trouble with "Soldier Through This." Version 2.0 doesn't really have any marriage songs, but the b-sides that were recorded afterwards suggest trouble.
And then beautifulgarbage comes across like the recording of a person who's life is in turmoil. Which in no way redeems it by the way.
So I guess Shirley's husband couldn't handle her fame and constant recording/touring schedule so he had an affair (or several) and the marriage fell apart. |
