The high-flying members of Michael Columbia bring you just that with their “Stay Hard” EP on Alabaster/Galapagos Records. Only in a city as cosmopolitan, freezing, and laid back as Chicago could an album as unique, fresh, multi-faceted and complex as “Stay Hard.”
The experimental rock super duo from Chicago who calls themselves Michael Columbia features David McConnell of Need New Body, Olivia Tremor Control and Bablicon and Dylan Ryan of Icey Demons and Orso The duo came together in Chicago in 2002 to experiment with original combinations of psychedelic drone, heavy beats, and spaced out vocals.
Even though Michael Columbia’s music is rooted in ambient instrumental improvisations, both Ryan and McConnell strived to create a more mobile sound with non-narritive phrases what evoke highly visual sensations. Ryan explains “We wanted to play songs that had more parts, still have solo’s, and be able to play the songs from the record live.” This is a mature evolution of their 2004 release “These Are Colored Bars” (Galapagos/Alabaster) and their 2002 self-released “spaceman album.”
Michael Columbia embarks on an tour east of the Mississippi this Spring with Knife Skills, Calabi Yau, and Big Bear in April:
