i mean, metal/alternative/grunge/punk was heavily dominated by male frontmen until about '95. i mean, men could ALWAYS be outrageous -- like sid vicious, or ozzy biting off a bat/dove (whatever it was) head, or alice cooper, or tommy lee.. they could curse and spit and growl and scream, but women couldn't or didn't. then courtney came, and this all changed.

so, if courtney is usefull for anything, this is it.

Better ****ing believe it. They don't even belong together in the same sentence. Corky couldn't lick Wendy's boots.

Yeah but who cares? Not listening to an artist because of their ****ty personality is as bad a not listening to an artist because they're ugly.

Also at her peak, Live Through This received across the board rave reviews and was named album of the year by several publications. All despite her antics.

Joan Jett can't touch that. She isn't even really respected so much as she is jukebox friendly because of her few novelty hits.

And while I like Chrissie Hynde a lot, something like "Violet" sounds so much more exciting. If you were weened on songs like that, the Pretenders are going to sound like a soft rock group who were a sort of neat new wave band for about ten seconds.

I suppose my point is that for a lot of people, Courtney is the only one who fills that role and Chrissie and (especially) Joan are poor substitutes.

Actually I think that if Courtney survives another ten years, she might be viewed the way Patti Smith is today, only with lots of ****ed up looking cosmetic surgery. Patti releases an album we could live without every so often, tours (not that extensively & mostly festivals) and people still care because her old stuff is good and she's an exciting live performer.

A new generation will grow up and to some of them, Courtney Love will become their discovery and it won't matter that she once called people "Paris Hilton obsessed newbies" or talked all sorts of bull****.
It's sort of like we're all Courtney's kids and we're really bitter and hate her, but she'll be a cool grandmother to our kids and they'll get along really well and talk about what ****s we are.

In her prime, Patti had some strong supporters, and then a lot of people who claimed she was talentless, overrated, couldn't sing, a name dropper, ugly, a scenester who ****ed a name for herself. And she did her fair share of acting like an asshole.

Her musical output even sort of mirrors Courtney's. Horses & Radio Ethiopia as Pretty on the Inside, Easter as Live Through This, Bruce Springsteen as her Billy Corgan and "Because the Night" her Malibu", Wave as Celebrity Skin.

Dream of Life and America's Sweetheart were both big disappointments that came after breaking up their bands, and feature the strongest concentration of both artists most cringe-worthy songs.

Gone Again was a big improvement, somber in tone, but still nowhere near as exciting as her earlier albums. Which I suspect will be the case with Courtney's next release.
