What are some guitar solos that are actually palatable, and removed from the "gosh isn't Steve Vai talented" Squealing Metal Guitarz template? Not the wanky ones that almost make you think "maybe a drum solo wouldn't be so painful after all"...
I've always liked Johnny Marr's effort in Shoplifters of the world unite.

What's the point then?
The only good ones are the obnoxious ones \m/
But yeah, the Steve Vai weedley wee, Im not into that kind of guitar tone either as talented as he is. Sorry I cant help you unless you are into the classic rock department though Im sure the Stone Roses and Raconteurs will have something nice, short and inobtrusive.
orange juice's nod to buzzcocks' boredom in the single rip it up
That is a goodie.

Anything by The Mars Volta is usually pretty good. John Frusciante has been on all their albums, so that adds to it.
I can't stand shit like Dream Theatre, they may have technical skill but it's pretty much them waving their dicks around & not actually making anything with soul. They show off all the technical shit that they know, but there's no point to it.
Whereas there's other bands with guitarists who have less skill but their music has way more feeling.

There's a nice guitar solo in a Nina Nastasia song on Dogs, I think it's on Nobody Knew Her. Nina just has a knack for making everything tasteful and perfect, and it's a testament to her gift that she can even do this with guitar solos.
Oh God, how could I forget Frusciante's music?? I am ashamed. His solo stuff should emphatically be on this thread as many times as possible, but it is a bit more like instrumental than guitar solos. The only good thing about RHCP is his great solos and intros.
Anything Pink Floyd. It's not about how fast they play (David Gilmour has often said that he doesn't consider himself a good guitarist cause he's slow - MADNESS!) but how expressive they are. I think they have the best guitar solos in the history of music.

Some Hendrix - I get a bit bored in the solos that go on for too long, like his Stars and Stripes. Oops, hope that's not heresy...Pink Floyd bore me too; they mostly remind me of hideously tedious car journeys when I was little, trapped in the back seat of my dad's prog time travel machine.
I mostly have too short an attention span for guitar solos, I think. I love listening to piano solos in, for example, Ben Folds music, and I like a lot of classical which is all instrumental, obviously, but I just find guitar solos really objectionable. Which seems a bit mean, because the electric guitar is a perfectly valid instrument. It's just tainted for me...
is it really a "guitar solo" if it's not in that over-embellished guitar virtuoso style? not every lead part, not every singular melodic line on the guitar is worthy of the title "guitar solo" is it?

I don't know...on any other instrument, a solo wouldn't have to be in a particular style, but with guitar the word "solo" has acquired so many other connotations (for instance, as a synonym for wanking.) It just seems like if we were to take the definition "a lead melodic line" like we would for any other instrument, it's only fair to take that for guitar. And it's almost the only way we can find any good guitar solos.
i was listening to feist... again and there was a moment in one evening when she does a sweet little solo in the middle. it was pretty cute. then i watched the video in youtube to see it. cute.
