| | | Dissertation Help... What genre is Marilyn Manson? Hey - I wanted to get a general consensus: what musical genre - BROADLY - would you say Marilyn Manson fits into?
I'm writing my dissertation on the development of representation of musical subcultures in the British press from the 50s to the present, and am focussing on rap/hip hop, emo (and goth with it) and on Marilyn Manson. Now, I know he could potentially fit into goth, but what I'm focussing on is the spurious linkage of him and his music to incidents such as Columbine...
Plus most of the research I've done on goth says that he's not goth, and I follow that way of thinking, I guess. The "goth" I'm focssing on, as it were, is the more romantic, literary, lovestruck, Cure sort of goth...
Any ideas? I don't want really really obscure classification, by the way - hence the capital letter BROADLY, which I'll put in again for emphasis...

| | | Alternative metal works for me.
The articles I've analysed have often spoken about "metal fans" but I'd be tempted to categorise that as "heavy metal". Which sounds ridiculous, and as outdated as "ghettoblaster", I know.

| | | i'd just say alt rock. too many people put him in the "industrial" category where they DO NOT fit. Same goes for NIN.
