We Are Scientists hail UK fans

The band say they feel right at home on their headlining tour

We Are Scientists singer Keith Murray claims that their latest headlining tour of the UK has felt like a sort of "homecoming" for the band following their recent slot on the ShockWaves NME Awards Tour 2006.

The US three-piece, who are coming to the end of their sold-out nine date jaunt, will play their first London date at the Astoria tonight (April 12), before rounding off their tour at Shepherd's Bush Empire tomorrow.

Speaking ahead of the gig, Murray told NME.COM: "It feels like a homecoming except it's not our home and they (the fans) won't have us. Other than that it's been the warmest possible homecoming."

During their recent performance at Birmingham Academy, the singer also revealed that he was forced to stop the show at one point because the crowd were getting out of hand.

"The show in Birmingham was a riot. The crowd were out of control," Murray added before he quipped: "I think the riot police were gonna come in and club them all. Luckily with a few kind words I got them to stop tearing each other's innards out.

"It always feels good for people to feel endangered because of us but it's better to become heroes by stopping them. We sort of get to play both cards."

The singer also admitted that despite getting on famously with the Arctic Monkeys during their recent ShockWaves NME Awards Tour, the three-piece still haven't had a chance to catch up with Alex Turner and co since they've been back in the UK.

"I haven't been able to track them down since we've been here because we've been preoccupied with our own tour. In fact, I haven't spoken to those guys in some time," he added.

Haha I saw them in Birmingham on Monday! It was mental, urm he didn't really have to stop the show though, he just told everyone they had to calm down because he wanted our spines to be intact! One of the best gigs I've ever been too. The crowd-surfing was mad!

Sounds like fun. I've been to Birmingham. One of my old time favorite bands ( Duran Duran) are from there. There is a book out in England about the early Birmingham Rum Runner club days. I wish I had the cash.

I love Birmingham, I don't live there myself though, I'm about a 20 minutes train ride away. But it's handy having a good venue for gigs so close. I saw The Subways last week at the same Academy but the We Are Scientists gig was so much better. I would love to see them again next time they tour in the UK.
