and the piano soundtrack by michael nyman is great, especially the song 'the promise' | I'm sort of ashamed to like the Elton John song...I don't really like any of his other songs, I think I do just have an attachment to that one because of Ben Folds covering it, but still...liking Elton John oh dear.
Anyway:
All Ben Folds (some Ben Folds Five but piano is most prominent in his solo work)
Ben Kweller (in the background on most songs, but especially nice piano parts on Sha Sha - the song - and the slower sad ones like In Other Words and Thirteen)
Regina Spektor - everything, but there's less piano on Begin To Hope, her latest album.
Quite a lot of Cat Power, like I Don't Blame You.
Ray Charles, Jelly Roll Morton, some nice jazzy stuff.
Some Elliott Smith; he uses a lot more piano on Figure 8 than his other albums. There's some really nice rough piano on the Lost and Found and especially the Son Of Sam intro.
Feist - Tout Doucement
Inflammatory Writ - Joanna Newsom
I was listening to the soundtrack to Bugsy Malone earlier; the theme is ace and the musical accompaniment is led by piano. You're probably not looking for songs from musicals, but Bugsy Malone is a class above the usual! |
