Dave Rowntree, longtime drummer for Blur, is behind the new animated series, Empire Square, which will premiere on the Fuse network April 18. Though animation may seem like an odd career choice, Rowntree, like the rest of Blur, attended art school and has his own animation studio in London called Nanomation. Blur's ex-guitarist, Graham Coxon, is a well-regarded painter while frontman Damon Albarn heads up the animated band Gorillaz. Rowntree organized the vocal talent and guides the creative direction of the show. Speaking with Billboard.com about Empire Square, Rowntree said: "I guess being a drummer, you get used to being in the back of the stage. I don't mind being behind the people who are behind the mics."
Rowntree had no details on a new Blur album, which may get going sooner now that Albarn has announced that Demon Days would be the last Gorillaz record.
