| peter buck is one of the smartest men in rock still to this day, though he's a little more acerbic than he used to be. he's the brainy big brother of r.e.m.
i don't think mike mills has ever lied about anything, he seems incapabale of being disingenuous. he also has very good manners but seems like he'd be a lot of fun to have a drink with. he's the integrity of r.e.m.
and michael stipe has evolved in a fascinating way in terms of the way he presents himself, though interviews from a long time ago sometimes make me want to strangle him since he even spoke in a completely different voice than he does now. i prefer the directness he has now, he's a very confident subject most of the time, but you can very much see that he still is, as he once described himself. "the soft heart, theimmediate woman in the band". i just got the Reveal DVD-A/CD package and it has a great 20 minute documentary and they talk about a lot of those songs. This Way Up is a great documentary of the making of that record and what they went through, and of course for older r.e.m., the recently released When The Light Is Mine is amazing.
