Have you ever felt like it was okay for SOME companies to use "cool" music in commercials? Like Apple? It doesn't bother me when they do it, and it didn't bother me when Levis used that Lush song in one of their commercials a few years back. Cause I like Levis.....and Apple products.

But I still cringe when they play shoegazer on car commercials. Am I biased?

I don't usually mind it. But this advert, its self tan! And Crap. And has one of my favourite Cat Power songs on it.

Saying that. I quite like hearing New Young Pony Club on the Apple advert.

It just seems odd because it is Cat Power I suppose. I wasn't expecting it.

she's also done commercials for cell phones and diamonds.
it's only annoying because you can't hear the fucking songs anywhere else.

i think you can see the culture-clash sometimes. do you think the people featured in the commercials listen to shoegaze in their freetime or were they looking for something hype to catch the ears of the younger demograph? were they trying to capture that one scene from 'Lost in Translation'?

instrumental backdrops don't sound so bad in commercials. because it comes and goes. it's ambience. it doesn't carry a logo like a singer's voice. it's also really fuckin cheesy when they use the lyrics as a slogan for the product. it makes me cringe so bad. like that cell phone commercial there. more bars? you want to take words which probably had real meaning, take them out of context, and make it about better cellphone coverage? urgh! it just reminds me exactly what i hate about pop music. it's vague, accessible, cheap, and means absolutely nothing in particular.

but whatever, if chan got paid, who cares. as long as this doesn't attract the kind of audience who will convince her to hire sit-in musicians to write the music for her. or she decides to do a music video with gwen stefani. and then totally reinvents herself, gets thousands of dollars worth of cosmetic surgery, etc.

i think this is why i don't have a problem when they commission artists to write the music specifically for the commercial.

*edit - because the intent is clear that they want an original soundtrack for their commercial. they deal with the artist directly. and there is no subversive marketting going on between the album and the TV ads

I'm not entirely disappointed by some artists for doing it because they were never anti-corporate in the first place, like Feist, she was never talking about how she'd never sell out to Lacoste. But there are some twatty bands that I just have to spit on for going against their own so-called beliefs.

But damn, Cat Power's really spreading her legs for the companies these days.
