| The Sinead O'Connor DVD The Value of Ignorance & Year of the Horse. It's a couple of years old already.
I'll never stop talking about this. It contains two concerts, one for each of her first two albums.
The first show isn't that great and suffers from gimmicky editing, hokey visual effects and only has songs from the first album.
The second one is brilliant.
I've always felt that people who can really sing are usually boring performers. They can hit every note, just like on the album, but you feel you might as well be listening to the album. Sometimes there's just no emotion at all.
Sinead is an exception. Her voice is incredible and sometimes she throws it around just to show off. But she isn't afraid to sacrifice notes if the performance calls for it. Even with "Nothing Compares 2 U" her big hit, it's like she's performing it for the first time and seems totally caught up in the song. You forget you've heard the song a million times over the years.
That song, "Troy" and "The Last Day of Our Acqaintence" as performed here are the only things I still really like about music.
She went nuts and the quality of her music went way down after her second album. But I always feel she doesn't get her due because of controversy and her big hit being a ballad. Or because she's deceptively close to all those Lilith Fair girls and was one for a while.
I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got should be up there with Rid of Me, Live Through This, Blue, Horses and all the other classics people offer up when talking about slits in rock.
And she can fight with Janis Joplin over the best girl rock singer crown. |
