| | | The "Hip Hop for people who usually don't like Hip Hop" Thread So....I'm not a big hip hop fan. I'm more an indie rock / electronic music kind of nerd, but there is some fucking amazing hip hop stuff out there. This isnt the kind of stuff you will see plastered over MTV these days.
So this is the thread for posting GOOD hip hop. Great tunes, with great melodies and no bullshit gangsta poseurism marketing (ie. 50 Cent).
Post yousendit's of tunes you love, albums people should check out. So many straight up rock music fans dont realize that there IS some quality stuff out there, with 95% of mainstream hip hop and rap being utter shit, I don't blame you guys for ignoring the the world of hip hop music, but there is still some wicked stuff out there.
Here's a few tunes....
Nas - Affirmative Action (from 1996's It Was Written) http://download.yousendit.com/F9B9DC7A528C234D
DJ Shadow w/ David Banner (intense, heavy tune about Katrina....perfect mesh of slick beats by Shadow and tight rhymes by Banner) http://download.yousendit.com/BBC78C866AD7448C |

| | | While I don't know if I can condone tokenism in music (not that this is necessarily what you're doing), I guess there's stuff like cLOUDDEAD which is just white and nerdy and underground enough to appeal to white underground nerds.
Me and a mate were talking about this in relation to Timbaland. White folk don't seem to get that hip-hop doesn't have to be commercially unviable to be any good. Timbaland gets props from black fans of the genre, but white guys with nerd glasses and Jewfros and backpacks who are trying way too hard can't see past the record sales to the really awesome music he makes.
In summary: go buy/download So Addictive by Missy Elliot. It's fucking incredible. |

In summary: go buy/download So Addictive by Missy Elliot. It's fucking incredible. | I wasnt trying to make it "tokenism" it just seems a lot of times, I just dig getting people into different kinds of music than they've been exposed to. These are tunes I've played for relative hip hop n00bs and its this kind of stuff and theyve gotten into, often leading the seek out more hip hop they can enjoy. Most white indie rock / alternative kids just know Beastie Boys and thats the only hip hop stuff theyve heard enough and like.
and yeah Timbaland is a total creative madman and has basically been able to rebuild or build people's careers. Nelly Furtado is awesome but lets face it, she would not be back in the spotlight if it wasnt the for the ridiculously catchy tunes Timbaland was able to craft for her. Missy, Justin and Nelly all basically owe a big chunk of their careers to Timbaland.
As far as there being a style of underground hip hop for the white kid sect (atmosphere, etc etc)....I'm sure there are tons. Lots of stuff on the Def Jux label probably, but I honestly don't really listen to that stuff very often. |

Scorpion by Eve
Three feet high and rising by De La Soul
Raw Like Sushi by Neneh Cherry. Influential. Possibly.

| | | Yeah, didn't want to jump down your throat, I was just about to start a Timbaland appreciation thread and saw this one, figured it was close enough.
But yeah, it does seem like a lot of the white hip-hop fans don't give people like Timbaland the time of day, pretty much entirely because he's successful. Most of them will spend ages seeking out hideously obscure and underground (unsuccessful?) stuff purely out of fear of not looking cool enough.
I dunno, for nerdy whitekid stuff that's actually any good, I guess cLOUDDEAD aren't terrible, a bit Flaming Lips sounding at times, and there's a group called Deviationists who are okay.
Other good stuff: Yin Yang Twins and Peanut Butter Wolf. |

| | | I've only heard Ten, I'm afraid. It's ok, in a kind of annoying way. I feel the same way as I do with Mr Scruff and DJ Shadow; when it's good, it's really good, but it quite often isn't.
DJ Krush, that's another one for the list. |

| | | Hip Hop for people who don't usually like Hip Hop is also the greatest hits albums by people like Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube; the stuff for people who would shy away from some of the content of the regular albums.

DJ Krush, that's another one for the list. | DJ Shadow has never really done much straight up....hip hop. Only on the new record does it sound like real hip hop, and even them.......its not a very good album. The best tune (i posted the mp3) is the only great example of Shadow's beats with a quality vocalist on the mic. |

And in reality, you cant get much more mainstream than Snoop.
"Hip Hop for people who don't usually like Hip Hop" is more about really well-made, thoughtful, musical tracks that can showcase the strength of someones rhymes with slick music. It's more of a "I know all the hip hop you see plasted on tv, out of shops in a mall and blasting from some twats stereo.......drives you insane. But fuck all that, there IS good stuff out there that you havent heard. A lot of the best shit came a decade ago, but I don't think most the kids on KR talking about Metric, The Killers, Lily Allen, etc.....are going to have a huge knowledge of older hip hop shit. That's why I made this thread.
Anyways......this is one of the 5 best tunes in hip hop history, in my opinion.
The track is just so melodic and smooth and chill that I can listen to it over and over and over.

Nas - It Ain't Hard To Tell (from 1994's Illmatic) http://download.yousendit.com/CC2D5C8C0DBAA4A2 | Brilliant. I was perusing my CD collection just now looking for a few things to listen to, and I seriously considered that album. But I went for Veruca Salt, TLC, Eve, Lloyd Cole and P.M.Dawn instead. Among others.

| | | I can really get into old N.W.A., Eazy E, and Public Enemy. Just about anything from the late 80s and early-90s, before it all stopped being fun. Also Avenue D, who are the newer, sluttier version of L'Trimm. |
