Sandinista Covers for Charity

Three dozen artists, from Camper Van Beethoven to Steve Wynn to the Smithereens, are contributing Clash covers to the double-disc compilation "The Sandinista! Project." Due May 1 on 00:02:59 Records, the project re-creates the 36 tracks from its namesake, the Clash's own 1980 effort "Sandinista!"

Proceeds from the set will be donated to a pair of charities, including the Clash's late frontman Joe Strummer's Memorial Forest organization. All-new contributions are made by Jon Langford & Sally Timms, Amy Rigby, Coal Porters, Stew, the Sex Clark Five and Chicago Clash cover band London Calling. Willie Nile and Matthew Ryan also leant their previously released covers "Somebody Got Murdered" and "Police on My Back," respectively, to the set.

pretty strange album to do this kind of compilation with. i haven't listened to this one in 20 years but i don't remember it being really great.

That was my first thought. The Clash had far better albums than that.

yeh, i guess this is a way of bringing the 'not so good' stuff that they'd done into the limelight. i suppose a compilation of one of their more popular albums would be a waste of time as it's already out there, being played etc (london calling, combat rock). i'd only ever liked 2-3 songs from the sandinista album but even then, for the sake of amusement, not in awe of their work. =7

Given that it's a 36 track album, perhaps it was just a way of getting as many artists involved as possible.
