| | | Beat Happening and other shit people pretend is good What a terrible band. Everything on K Records is pretty much guarenteed to be horrible.
Here's a video of Beat Happening live. They suck even for a band playing on the sidewalk: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oljL1zbGkTY
Funniest thing is the comment somebody left: "awful, I hope somebody called the cops to stop this sh*t."
Writing really boring & stupid songs that you can't even play properly doesn't make your band cool.
It's good not every band on earth tries to sound like what's on the radio and there are people more concerned with creating interesting music than getting a record deal with a major label.
But none of that means anything if you're songs are all shit.
They maybe have three good songs. And even those aren't amazing by any stretch. |

Nothing original or great though |

| | | 70% of sonic youth songs (though admittedly the 30% is very good)

Nothing original or great though | The yellow album with that crudely drawn cat in a rocket on the cover? I think it's a compilation of their first album and a bunch of early EP's.
I was listening to that while washing dishes once and that shitty a cappella song "Honey Pot" came on just as my brother and his friends walked into the house. So I didn't get a chance to race to the stereo and switch it off, as I usually do when it starts. It's the most embarrassing song of all time. If I wrote it I would kill myself. But even listening to it does horrible things to your self respect.
They have a song called "Revolution Come and Gone" on one of their albums that is actually quite good. I'm sure they manage to ruin it live though. |

| | | I'm sure it's not an accident....the whole K Records sloppy lo-fi "I recorded this with a Casio tape recorder from the 80s AND I was in the bathtub eating Doritos when I did it" thing they have going is sort of a punk thing. It's not always good, but I think it's not always supposed to be. |

| | | I like Beat Happening actually. The Dreamy album is pretty good, I really loved that song "Cry For a Shadow." I guess they're sort of hit and miss though. Like Sebadoh, I was a huge fan in the past but have to admit they did some lukewarm albums. |

The whole "if it sounds like any effort went into, it must be dishonst" take on music is more 80's/early 90's.
It's sad to think that great bands like Nirvana wasted a lot of energy apologizing for their greatness.
People can't write hits anymore, but at least they aren't ashamed by the idea of them. |

I think it's impossible to sit down and think: gonna write myself a hit. And it doesn't even matter. If the music is good eventually some peoplel will be listening to it and maybe someday recognize it. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
