I'm sure it's not an accident....the whole K Records sloppy lo-fi "I recorded this with a Casio tape recorder from the 80s AND I was in the bathtub eating Doritos when I did it" thing they have going is sort of a punk thing. It's not always good, but I think it's not always supposed to be.

I like Beat Happening actually. The Dreamy album is pretty good, I really loved that song "Cry For a Shadow." I guess they're sort of hit and miss though. Like Sebadoh, I was a huge fan in the past but have to admit they did some lukewarm albums.

One good thing I can say about current music is that the additude you described has been tossed aside to an extent.

The whole "if it sounds like any effort went into, it must be dishonst" take on music is more 80's/early 90's.

It's sad to think that great bands like Nirvana wasted a lot of energy apologizing for their greatness.

People can't write hits anymore, but at least they aren't ashamed by the idea of them.
